Just picked up a free Carver PSC-60 receiver!

Hello everyone,

I had the chance to pick up a free Carver PSC-60 rack mount receiver today. It didn't look like much at first glance, as it was extremely dirty and the power button had fallen off, but now that I've been able to clean it up at home, it appears to be in very good condition. I understand that Carver is a high quality brand, so I am thrilled to get it, especially for free. I still will need to find something to use as a power button, does anyone have any recommendations for what I could use?

I believe that's a preamp tuner, not a receiver. You'll need an amp to get any sound.

I'd watch eBay for a used power button. It might take some time but just keep a eye out for one. You never know. They pop up from time to time.

Interesting. So basically this unit houses every component of a receiver except for the actual sound production? Is there a cheap amplifier that I could buy to use with this device (to avoid spending too much money on a device that may not work properly anyway)?
 
The cheapest way to test it is if you have, or have access to a known working receiver that has rca pre out and pre in connections, you could then use a rca cable to connect the Carver's pre outs to the receivers pre in connections while both units are powered off. Once all hooked up (speakers connected to receiver) turn on both and see if you get any sounds. Make sure the settings on the preamp are selected correctly. Avoid hot swapping, plugging in the RCA's while the units are turned on, to prevent damaging anything and costly repairs.

This way, you won't have to buy an amp just to test it out. If everything works out fine & dandy, then you could start looking for a good amp to pair it up with.

That is good to know! Also, since I noticed that there is a headphone jack on the front of the unit, could I also test most of the functions with a pair of headphones to determine if I should purchase an amplifier? It seems that there are cheaper amplifiers on the internet that cost somewhere around $20, so I probably will go with something a little on the cheaper side.

Thank you for the reply! Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find a manual for the PSC-60, but nevertheless, I still will proceed with picking up an amplifier (as all of the functions on this device appear to work when I switch it on, albeit without any sound right now). I could have saved myself some confusion just by looking at the back of the unit to see that there are no outputs for speakers.
 
Hey, it was free. Can't complain about that. It certainly would have followed me home too. Free is a good starting point to building a system. But if it were up to me, I'd save up and get a good sounding amp. The $20 amp could tie me over until I found the right amp. Even something like a Audiosource Amp One, which you could possible buy for $50-60 used if you look hard enough, would be a pretty good start.

I have a Carver C6 that looks very similar. I use it on my bench with tube amps that I am re-building. Very clean sound and a decent tuner. Generic remotes can be found cheap also.
