Just picked up hopefully a decent TT?

I picked up this Luxman PD-289 yesterday they originally wanted $350 but dropped the price to $300 because they said the Stove didn't work? It seems to work fine, also the Cart they included I can't find anything about it? Anyone familiar with the TT and Cart? Was it a Good deal? I have 10 days to return it if I don't like it. I tested a few Albums on it the sound is great no issues that I can find.

They said "Stove"? I guess they meant "strobe" or you won't be having no beans and sausages cooked on your Lux. If the stroboscope (that window in front of the platter) doesn't work, there's no comfy way of telling if it's spot on speed. The good news is it's based on some vintage LN81RCPHL LED that's fed 1.8VAC from a dedicated transformer winding, and had probably just died out. It's an easy fix if you find a replacement and the power supply is intact. Yes it's a nice turntable. The cart is just a lowly Ortofon with what reads as an aftermarket stylus. This TT can do way better than that. What's with the blue marker scribbling on the ID plate?

The stove is Google auto correct, and the blue scribble is to cover the serial number. Yes the strobe works they just said to they couldn't get it to stabilize? I got it to hold on 33 1/3 no problem .

I've never been a fan of any of the Ortofon Concord line of cartridges. That would be the first thing to change were the TT mine.

What would be a few recommendations? I haven't touched a TT since the mid 80s and have no idea what's available.
 
Audio Technica cartridges get lots of good press on AK. So does Denon and Sumiko. A lot depends on your cartridge budget and what type (MC/MM) of phono input you are able to use.

FWIW: My daily driver is a LO Sumiko Blackbird. I use a modified Marcof head amp into my ARC SP-9.

I'm using a preamp until I need to replace my AVR it was made in 2010 didn't have phono inputs :( I'm not sure if it has a limitation on the MM or MC carts.

No matter. If it only says Phono it means a MM/MI or HOMC (high output moving coil) is required.

The tone arm on your TT looks to be a lower mass arm. If so you'd be better of with a high to medium compliance cartridge. MC cartridges tend to be on the low side of medium to low compliance. Most MM cartridges are medium to high compliance. They'd be a good match to your arm.
 
I fixed the strobe in my Luxman PD121 by replacing the capacitor. Maybe that would work for yours. Congrats!

How would I determine the mass of the tone arm? Sorry for all the questions I'm really rusty on the subject what your saying rings a bell but I'm basically a newb at this point you forget a lot in 30 years. I do have a PDF of the service manual and the owners manual I didn't look through them yet. Here's all I can find on the Tone arm specs.

S shaped arms with removable head shells are mostly higher mass arms. Arms like a Rega or ProJect are mostly medium mass (Carbon fiber=lower mass). J shaped arms and straight arms (angle in the head shell) with a thin tube for the arm tend to be lower mass arms.

I have a tricked out medium mass Rega RB-300 on a modified VPI HW-19. It works very well with lower compliance cartridges. I also have a Micro Seiki DQ-43. It has a low mass arm (MA-707 w/straight tube) that features a sliding weight that allows for changing the effective mass. It has a high compliance Shure V-15IV w/Jico SAS stylus.

As for questions about a specific TT a good place to start is www.vinylengine.com. They have a number of well known and knowledgeable vinyl enthusiasts.

And then, there is AK. If you ask the right question here someone will respond. If you get a bad or wrong answer someone else will also respond.
