Just "scroed" some Vandersteen goodness!

Long story short, I ended up paying $100 for a pair of Vandersteen Model 1's. I picked them up this morning, and had to go to work an hour later, so I barely had any time with them. What I can say is they seem very promising, and I believe I can easily get used to their sound as signature.

I'll post pics later tonight, and I can't wait to listen some more! Sultans of Swing and Inca Roads sounded pretty good while getting ready for work this morning...

Here are some pics (sorry they're a little grainy).

They're in pretty good shape, other than some separating veneer and some scraggly fabric at the top. There are no tears or runs anywhere, and they came with the bases. And the serial number are consecutive!

Awesome! I have a pair of 1C and they sound fantastic! They’re thirsty speakers, and a high watt amp will make them happy. 150 WPC all day long. I have 2Ce’s too and the 1C’s do surprisingly well compared, just not quite as much bottom end.

can’t beat them at $50 per speaker!

So I spent some more time with them last night. I noticed how revealing they are of sources and individual recordings. I was listening to "Babylon Sisters" by Steely Dan, and at first I was a little disappointed in the way the snare drum sounded- very tinny. The rest of the song- vocals, bass, guitar, keyboards, etc- sounded fantastic!

But they really came alive when I listened to "Riviera Paradise" by Stevie Ray Vaughan. I was hearing more details than I have heard in that song before, such as Stevie's very light playing in the background during Reese Wynan's piano solo. The piano sounded so real and immediate, but never harsh and thin like some speakers sound when trying to reproduce piano. Bass is incredible, especially considering these have an 8" woofer. Very fast and textured, but never bloated. Mids are just right, kind of like a classic Advent, but a little more detailed and smoother.

I was surprised at how well they handled rock music. Machine Head by Deep Purple was another album that I listened to several times before, but was amazed at how much I have missed. And again, the bass was very well defined and excellent all around.

I'm just about to clock in at work, so I'll have to leave it at that for now.

I had a set of 1Bs in the way back. Very nice speakers that throw a big soundstage with sharp imaging. But, they lacked a bit in the bass. So, I eventually upgrade to the 2Ce Sigs. Enjoy.......

In my smaller room they seem to have just the right amount of bass for me, but I did try them with my subwoofer. It didn't really add much, so I turned it back off.

I'm still amazed at these speakers. I listened to True Stories by Talking Heads, followed by Black Sabbath's first album. Again, I thought the bass was impressive, and David Byrne's vocals sounded clean and clear. Tony Iommi sounded like he was right in my room, and Bill Ward's drums sounded very real.

I've been reading up on these on pretty much every audio forum I can find. Many people say these aren't good rock speakers, but I don't hear that at all. No they're not brash or in your face, but they aren't lacking in any way either.
