WOW!! Thats Some Score! Those are Awesome and really nice you gotta love those once in a lifetime deals!! There was a set of 5`s here for $4500 for the pair original owner. Alas no funds!! Congrats on a Super find!
 
I just blew up my laptop from all the drool getting on it...:dammit: :drool: :D Nice score, I would go to any cost to get those up to the best condition possible. 8B, such a gorgeous piece. The speakers aren't bad either! :yes:

Those speakers are on the same level with his gear. I know alot of people consider them to be their dream speaker!

You REALLY lucked out, just in case that hasn't been ephasized enough.

I doubt that those caps were any good anymore. They get very leaky, passing leakage current. Which is bad news if they were coupling caps from a driver tube plate to an out tube control grid. Which upsets the bias, turning the output tube on too hard, making it draw too much current and burning some hard to find replacements for parts out.

The amp wouldn't have sounded the way it did when it was brand new, as well.

Unfortunately, what you said is exactly true. I guess some would use those capacitors in a tone circuit but to allow them to be connected from a plate to an output grid is just something that I would hate to see. Red plates on those expensive output tubes, factory installed smoke being released from those expensive output transformers and maybe even the power transformer.

You could replace the capacitors, have a wonderful sounding piece of equipment, not worry about listening to it for hours, run it every day, and of course, sell the capacitors on eBay, possibly recouping your investment in replacement parts (Yeah, I know, run-on sentence, but I hope you will understand... :rolleyes:)
 
So I just got back from getting the quads from the guys' house. (didn't have room in the car yesterday) anyway, the quads came with the power cables and what looks like to be the original speaker wire?(from the interconnects)
also get this.... he gave me a box of NOS tubes which contained;

2 ge el34's gt britain (older style)
2 GE el34/6ca7 GT. Britain
2 sylvania el-34's
5 pack telefunken 12ax7 and a single (6 total) NOS!
2 amperex el34 NOS!
2 ge 6cg7's
1 ge 6bh6

paid him 100 more and he gave me 4 paradigm atom mk3's with adjustable stands!

AND as I was leaving he threw in a Monitor audio "silver" center channel speaker (bi-wire) !!

This guy was so cool. He said he has a garage full of HP testing equipment that he gave away to "someone a lot like me"
