JVC Cartridge Question

racfan9

Super Member
Good Evening, I've got a JVC QL-7 that needs a new stylus, the only markings on the cartridge is on the bottom which says model 100. So who actually manufactured this cartridge and is there still a stylus out there that will fit this thing.

Thanks,

Hi racfan, the only thing I can find is the JVC MC-100II. Since that is a MC-cartridge you just can't swap the stylus, it needs a professional re-tip. IF your cartridge is the MC-100II (check the link) you might consider getting a new cartridge instead of having the old one re-tipped.

Here's a few pics of the cartridge and what remains of the old stylus, I'm thinking it's a stanton of some sort.

This one:

Looks like a Signet Hitec 100 cart/stylus.

Signet was a high end line made and sold by Audio-Technica. Many had Audio-Technica branded equivalents and most (all?) could be fitted with one kind of A-T stylus or another.

Looks to be an AT-3600 variant.

And that's the A-T equivalent. Styli for the AT3600, and therefore the Signet Hi Tec 100, are readily available. The basic styli are really nothing to write home about but there's a nice JICO Shibata type stylus available for it.

Generics, generally, can be found listed as being in the Pfanstiehl 211 group.

are you aware that the headshell is the older style technics shell as used on the SL1300 and others.

Yes, it is but it should still work fine on the JVC. It will absolutely fit and the fore and aft range of cartridge adjustment on those is pretty large since you can rotate the sled 180 degrees to change the geometry. That means alignment shouldn't be an issue.

jimreeves is correct. A Signet HiTec 100 cartridge. Signet was the high end line of Audio-Technica cartridges. Should be a good one. I figure there will be a stylus available for that from Signet or the AT sibling.

I'm aware of that John I was just commenting to the Op in case he wondered as to what headshell he had..........:scratch2:

My response was more directed at the OP or someone else who might wonder whether your reason for bringing it up had to do with potential problems in using it.

So I'm assuming the S on the old stylus stood for Signet not Stanton. Thanks for all the info, now I'll try to get one ordered.

You assume correctly. :)

John

Yup, your 4th pic showing the wax seal 'S' mark was a dead giveaway. While the generic stylus I linked isn't as good as the Jico or Shibata alternates, it's a finer tip than the original 4x7 and it might be a good place to start to see if you like it's sound character. It may be a better match compliance-wise than the others for your arm too, though that's just speculation on my part. Nice to know it's upgradeable if you like it.

Also, the Shibata upgrade has two compliance choices so there should be one to suit the mass of the JVC arm.

But The op already knew that as it came with the table. So to me your reply wasn't necessary.
