I've got a QL-Y55F, using it as my thrash table. Meaning the table is mint I just have a AT-160ml cart on it I can afford to play my less than perfect records on. This deck deserves a way better cart, but is perfect with the auto return for recording my record. I don't need to be there when the record ends to cue the needle.

This is how the over rating of japanese TT's in general started.

Some years ago:
"Hey I found a Technics SP-10 for $25 and a SL-1200 for $20.
Isn't that $5 cheaper than it should be?

By the way, the SL-1200 has been modified with another bearing, a different platter, another arm base and another arm, it's been made into suspended and belt driven and build into a proper plinth, the motor has been replaced with one of the better english ones and the feet have been modified too, all of it just like suggested by the BBC.
Will that make it worth more.?"

Maybe we will soon see people paying $2500 for those JVC with or without the same kind of modifications.

I've recently been reading some threads on other boards where people talk just about this way, and are serious about it ...and on other boards, where they rip those attitudes to shreds. Even one board where BRITISH people, of the formerly brainwashed variety, have now taken to organizing face-off comparisons in which their Japanese DD TTs (and in one or two cases, idler-wheel drives) have been trouncing the famous suspended designs, leading them to decry the fact that they were "sold a bunch of goods" and hoodwinked for so many years. It has been very amusing to read, as an outsider!

I should post a pic of the miniature wine bottle I found a few days ago that's shaped like Hamlet.

I have the JVC QL-Y5F TT from 1980, but I´m not satisfied with it. It playes with a lot of s-sounds on the highs, and I can´t seem to find a PU that works on it, I have tried Ortofon VMS 20 E MKII, Clearaudio Aurum Wood, and nothing, still it makes s-sounds.

1 make sure your records are clean
2 make sure the cart. is mounted properly.
3 some records were not made well also and have that SSSSSSSSSS SOUND no matter what you do.

4 used records if the person before you played them on a ceramic cart. that will also cause the sound.

I would be much better off if I bought that Garrard 301/Thorens/Rega/Linn,and then bought the upgraded power supply,bought or made a completely different tonearm for it,made a new plinth from wood only found in the Black Forest,and then tear it apart if I need to change the speed.

1 make sure your records are clean
2 make sure the cart. is mounted properly.

Thanks, I´ll try some different stuff to make it work. I just bought a new stylus for the Z1 PU that was on the TT originaly.

So let me get this straight. Are we now comparing a limited production boutique Thorens to a 1200 to finally settle the BD/DD debate?

All fun and games aside, the JVC line in this time period is quality.

A far cry from the modern dreck wearing the badge nowadays.

That, of course, is a generalization, and they are still capable of great gear- some of the CD and DVD players are true gems.

But frankly, most of their modern offerings are not.



Let's be honest- those wonderful belt drive TTs shown here are most likely supreme.


But for the working man who wants HiFi that's RELATIVELY affordable, there's a whole slew of direct drive Japanese tables and belt drive American and European tables of vintage era that will shame many a modern belt drive table, or direct drive table, for that matter.

A few exceptions notwithstanding.



Quality affordable sound can be found in modern offerings, and vintage offerings in belt drive, idler drive and direct drive camps.


I'm not interested in pissing in anyone's Cheerios.


And I have no desire to mock those who strive for good affordable (within whatever their budget) sound.

If you can afford a $1000+ Yamaha GT-2000, awesome. A $2,500 VPI classic? nice! A $400 Technics SL-1200? Good for you! A $900 Rega P3? wonderful. A $200 JVC? Excellent!

Yessir.... those direct drive turntables certainly do suck.

Errrr ummmm just take my word for it. Ignore the fact I've got three DD turntables as 'daily drivers.'
