JVC full-range speakers, anyone have experience with them?

Hello, let me start off by saying that I'm sorry if this is the wrong sub-forum to post this question.

I've been in the market for a pair of tiny speakers for my desktop PC, and I've heard nice things about, believe it or not, the 3" full-range speakers that shipped with JVC micro-systems of the late 90's and early 2000's. One of them being the JVC SP-UX7000, made with real European Cherrywood, and have ceramic 3" drivers. This is the most well-regarded model I've heard of.

I managed to order a pair of the 7000's little brother for only $19, the JVC SP-UX1000GR. They look similar in size, except the 1000GR's cabinet is made from a different material, and it has a different 3" driver. The 1000GR does seem to be well-regarded too, but not as well-known. Was only $19, though. Not a big deal if they end up sounding meh. That being said, has anyone had a chance to listen to some of these various full-rangers from JVC?

Since you are asking about speakers, the speakers section might have been the best place for this. You will probably still get responses here. It is "general" after all.
Hopefully people who can offer their opinions on the speakers you bought. The UX7000 seemed to be pretty well regarded, not sure about the 1000GR.
If you'd rather this was in speakers ask a mod to move this. Do not start another thread in speakers as multiple threads on the same topic are frowned upon.

I finally received the JVC's today. Unfortunately, the seller did an awful job at packaging them. They arrived in a slim, beat-up Amazon box with nothing but a single layer of large bubble-wrap covering the top of the speakers. I could hear them rattling inside the box.

Because of this, one speaker suffered cosmetic damage during transit. A damaged corner and some dings here and there. Nothing that a Sharpie couldn't fix, though.



There's no point in disputing this, since they're $19 speakers, and it's not major damage. Rest assured that the seller got a 3-star review, though.

Putting that aside, these speakers really are some handsome little fellas.





The sound quality is fantastic; buttery smooth mid-range and treble without a hint of harshness, there's even some bass too! They don't pound, they're 3" full-range woofers, after all. But, I'm loving the cleanliness and the wide soundstage of these things. I know for sure that they would sound great with a powered subwoofer.

Comparing these to my Zilch-modded Minimus 7's that I was using prior, I think these JVC's beat them in every department, except for bass. The 7's have a sharp sound signature that I'm not a fan of, especially since I like my music loud.

Without a doubt, this has got to be the best $19 I've ever spent. Amazing, balanced sound from these 3" drivers. Perfect for my PC setup.

Nice! It seems that for near field, particularly at modest volumes you can get away with very small drivers and still have it sound pretty good.

I have a little class D amp hooked up to my computer powering some NHT SuperOne speakers (that I found for all of $30) which to me sound great. These speakers might really be overkill though and for the way that I use them the even smaller SuperZeros might be about as good, though my desk has plenty of room for the bigger speakers. A friend of mine with a home recording studio and a boatload of gear has offered me some really high quality studio monitors (can't remember the brand, but they're apparently very good), which he says have some small issue but may just be a loose wire or something of that nature. Studio monitors are self powered things and can be used for computer speakers (obviously they're hooked up to computers for digital recording setups). I'll just need some kind of DAC to really get it to work as the little class D SMSL amp that I was using with the NHTs has one of those built into it. Anyway, if what I have is overkill for a computer setup, these studio monitors will be even more so... but I won't be complaining!

I have a Kenwood receiver tucked under my computer desk to power these JVC's. Takes up a lot of my leg room, and definitely overkill, but man! It's a small price to pay for great sound quality.

Surprisingly, the JVC's are able to fill the room with clean and clear sound. I might have to start collecting more of these JVC micro system speakers, there's some hidden gems out there!

You might want to check to see if the drivers are Foster or Fostex. That would explain a lot.
