JVC Globe Speakers VS-5313 Replacement Drivers?

Hello, I have a pair of JVC Globe speakers VS-5313. The drivers are in poor condition. Has anyone replace the Tweeters and the Midrange/Bass drivers? I want all new inside. I am having trouble finding ones that bolt in or can be modified. I sure could use some help, Thanks, Big JohnIMG_3988.JPG

Can you fix the drivers? What’s in poor shape? Also, those gray bomb capacitors may be an additional source of poor sound.
I ask because it may be difficult to match new drivers to the enclosure. JVC likely designed them around that sphere.
 
They don't appear to me to be in poor condition. Have you actually removed the drivers from the cabinet to see how the cones look?

thanks, I wanted to upgrade the drivers because they are 40 years old and my AMP is very high powered

That picture of the good one, The other one the cones are torn because they are old and my amp is Very high power. I was hoping someone replaced the drivers with aftermarket ones..Thanks
 
That's not how speakers work. You can't just throw a bunch of drivers in a box and expect them to play together properly. The fact that your amp is high power is irrelevant, just keep the volume at a reasonable level and you won't do any damage.

Pull the woofers with the torn cones and post pics. Is it the cone itself, or the surrounds that are torn, BIG difference. Surrounds can be easily replaced. Torn cones can be repaired by cutting pieces of coffee filter paper glued to the back side of the cones, use some Eileens Tacky glue and repair the BACK SIDE of the cones. Get the cone tear area as close to original position as possible, then proceed with the repair. The coffee paper pieces should extend about 1/4 inch past the damaged area.

The Dayton metallized polyprop capacitors, 5% tolerance from Parts Express should work fine for this speaker. Do post the values when you can look at them. Probably they are under 10 uf for tweeters so the films will be perfect for those. Larger ones may need to be nonpolar electrolytic.

Second the advice to post pics of the fronts of the drivers.
 
Oh, any idea the wattage rating of the speakers, and what amp are you using? Do you have a subwoofer?

Those mid-woofers look to be cast frame, very nice drivers!

This is for the Mark III version which appears to be different - more components in the crossover and it's all mounted in one place instead of distributed among drivers.

It says 1.5 and 3.3 uf caps. I would look at the ones on your speakers though.

Also, the peak power handling is 100 wpc for the MkIII. No figures for sensitivity but I expect they are fairly sensitive given the number of drivers.
 
Thanks Guys for all your input. The schematic of the Mark III shows a 3.5uf casp between the woofers but my speakers do not have that. Should I install the 3.5 caps between the woofers like in the schematic or they are not needed for this model? Any input? Thanks, John
 
Thanks All for all the input. I solved the speaker problem. I am having them reconed, Next problem if anyone has the know how , to ad a cap to this circuit ? (attached)GB-1E wire.png to make the woofers more midrange than Bass? Thanks again for all your help, Big John
 
A cap that small between series woofers? Both pairs? That would act as a high pass filter as you pointed out, and it would actually not matter whether it was in front or behind the woofers or in between. If it was only the rear woofers it could make sense if they were contouring the output for the ambience drivers. I would not change it if the speakers sound balanced as they are. If they are too bass heavy that would be a reason to do it. I find many speakers too shouty in the midrange, but maybe that's just me. Are we even sure the drivers are identical in the Mk III?
