JVC JA-S55 with some out of spec voltage

Ilwhtt, I checked out X301 and X303, and I found that my 18 months ago, less informed self only replaced one of them (X301) with the KSC2316 at some point. So they were definitely not matched. I put the old transistor back in place and boom, I got DC offset to less than 1mV with the jumper removed. Sound check next

OK, when I plugged in some speakers I got some interference, which sounded like static from a lack of grounding. Sure enough, I found three broken jumper wires, which didn’t surprise me considering I flipped the unit over what seemed like a million times, and the volume and two tone boards were loose and twisting during that time.

With that fixed, the buzz went away. Grabbed my aux cord and the Realistic Minimus 7 speakers I have on the bench and hooked it up. Left channel was weak and had a bit of static, but I noticed the static changed when I turned the balance knob. So I got the contact cleaner out and went to work. After a few sprays and a lot of turning the left channel weakness went away. I think it may be a little “thin” sounding compared to the right hand channel, but its really a small difference so maybe my mind is playing tricks on me because of all of the trouble I had with that left channel.

I’m going to leave the case open and give it a few more hours to break in over the next few days and see what else I can find. Thanks for getting me to this place!

OK, after some more switch cleaning and a few hours of play, I’m ready to call this one good. Thanks again Ilwhtt for the help and guidance! Here are a few photos of the finish.

Nice looking amp. Worth the effort...
