JVC JR S301 setup help

So I just received a the JVC JR-s301 and 2 speakers from my niece that were my fathers and have had little use since before he passed in 1990. I know very little about audio equipment but with a little guidance and tips can get this hooked and working. I had the speakers connected and had an AM station come through, but I would like to get FM working and also get it working with my computer or phone. Any help on getting this setup up and fully functional would be great appreciated. Pictures of your setup or any visual details will help even more. There is not very much online for those who don't know what they are doing.

It's hard to guess. Show us some pics of what you have.

It sounds like you have the speakers connected properly, and to listen to either AM or FM, you just simply select AM or FM on the selector switch.

If it has "TAPE IN" or "AUX" plug ins in the rear, then your computer can be plugged into either of these via the computer's earphone jack or the phones earphone jack.

At the very least, it looks like you will need a pair of these. No Affiliation!

phone should plug in to an AUX input.
FM Must have an antenna, try a chunk of wire about 3-4 feet long connected to one of the 300Ω terminals, until someone corrects that info.

There are antenna out there, usually a T-shaped wire with two connections at the bottom called a folded dipole. It connects to the same 300Ω connections, both of them.

Sign up at HFE and download the manual for the 401, bigger but there is an owners manual to help you out.

the FM doesn't come in, on certain station it will make a thump noise when i pass by it and is shows the signal strength as good but no sound comes out. it has both tape and aux ports in the back and i did connect my phone via aux cord to the aux ports and no sound came through when i had it set to aux. i also have a JVC stereo cassette deck ( KD-85J ) that was also setup with it at one point too.
 
i plugged the phone in through the aux port in the back and had it set to aux and no sound came through while connected to either port. i can try setting up some sort of antenna so see it that helps. like i said i got clear sound on an AM station but absolutely nothing while on FM, the speakers did make a thump noise when i passed over a couple stations and it said the strength was good but nos sound came out.
 
FM, turn off the Muting. You should get interstation noise. If not, the unit might want service. But we need to do more first.
 
there is an fm button and a fm with mute button and i had it set to fm not the mute one. Is the a mute button otherwise because i was switching back and forth and only using the AM and FM when i noticed i only got sound from the AM station it picked up. it doesnt have much for an antenna and i live in a big enough city it should have gotten more then the one station i found on AM
 
Make sure FM muting is off and find a piece of wire for the FM antenna connection in the rear. Even in a city, FM reception will be crap without a dipole or wire of some sorts connected to the FM antenna screw.

Make sure the tape monitor is not engaged when in "AUX" mode. This should work with the phone plugged into the "AUX" jacks. Make sure the phone volume is all the way up.
