JVC KD-A5 Repair Help

I recently got a JVC KD-A5 from my cousins that's been sitting in their garage since the late 80's. Most everything works on it, the belts are good and all the lights work, with the exception of the record LED. I don't think it's bad, I think the record function has gone out.

It has soft touch buttons for the playing functions (REW,FF,Play,Stop,REC, and PAUSE). The LEDs for the Play and Pause come on, but the REC doesn't. I press the button but there's no movement inside and the tape doesn't start to move. With everything else being almost mechanically instant, I would expect it to make a responsive click when it's starting to record, but there's nothing that happens.

If anyone could help me with this, give me some tips, or point me in the direction of a service manual that isn't for a JVC KD-A7, I will be extremely grateful!

"…I press the button but there's no movement inside…" I apologize if this sounds lame or insulting — but are you pushing *just* the REC button? As with many machines, you have to press both REC and PLAY to go into Record mode. I say this only because there are a number of folk just getting into tape machines who have never before worked with them. Again, apologies if you already know that.

Hmmm. Was going to send you to HiFi Engine but I see I ended up at the KD-A7 page too. I also see a query on the FixYa site also directed the questioner to the same page. This site has one for sale: http://www.vintagemanuals.com/manual/JVC/KD-A5

Good luck and take care,

Thank you, it works now! I wasn't pressing them both at the same time. I'm glad I posted on here before I tried to fix something that wasn't broken : )
I'll probably end up buying the manuals just in case something does go wrong with it in the future.

Glad to hear it was simple "operator error." Enjoy your "new" cassette deck!

Take care,

Pressing REC and Pause at the same time puts it into REC pause mode and by touching the PLAY button, this starts the recording process without delay.
