JVC KD-V6 replacement belts

A friend of mine told me today that he wants a cassette deck but doesn't want to spend too much on it. I've had a JVC KD-V6 for about a year that initially played and sounded great but a few months ago started slowing down and sounding weird. Are replacement belts and/or idlers still available for these decks? He doesn't have a lot to spend, I know that, so I'd like to let him have this for what I've got in it ($25), plus the belt cost. Thanks in advance for any information you can provide, I appreciate it.

Offhand, I don't see any belt kits for sale. You may need to measure the old belts and get back to us.

That is strange....same exact thing happened to my KD-V6. Had it for about a year, used it regularly and it worked like a champ, then during a Saturday taping and listening session it just started slowing down all of a sudden and now it sits in my attic.

I don't think it would be the belts, though. Wouldn't it be strange for them to crap out all of a sudden?

Anyway, good luck and I hope that you solve your problem and this thread generates some responses, since I am a very interested party to these proceedings.
 
fyi for future generations...have this deck as we speak from a customer and shot the problem....down load the service manual supplement from hifi-e. In the exploded diagram the problem is tiny part 24. it rides on the capstan shaft in the cut window of capstan housing part #23. this is a plastic roller that is press fit on the shaft when the flywheel/capstan is pushed into the capstan housing.

they crack and while they still provide enough torque to run the tape then now can drift on the capstan shaft and recess themselves into housing #23. at this point the idler wheel only makes contact on the edge and as such the takeup reel does not take up.

I have no fix for this yet, Id bet the plastic roller as they call it is not to be found. not only is it plastic, but it has straight cut ridges in it to act as traction. eventually this will fully fail.

so what I did was a hack for now - I took a 14-16 gauge crimp connector (red) and cut off about 3/16ths of it. I then mounted it to a dremel and using a nail file reduced its outer diameter to where it now fits into the recess in part 23 (if you have one apart you weill know what I mean. I chamfered the exposed edge and then pressed it into #23 until was recessed. Now part 24 will ride on the capstan and have room for thrust.
