JVC RX884r receiver and average sound

Hi, my problem is the amplifier is giving very metallic tinny kind of sound, equalizer adjustment don't help. I'm using Pioneer S-IS22 3-way 100W 6 ohm speakers which appear more than decent. My old system used to be a laptop with AC97 codec and Thomson Altima 380 stereo which looked like this.

So all I'm trying to do is find the same balance here, but nothing ever compares to that system. Now i'm feeding the sound from a regular PC with Ip45 chipset which has some kind of VIA codec. I wonder is the problem in the receiver, maybe the caps have dried up or something? I also noticed that listening to music from the receiver in the headphones provides much better richness , although still not perfect. And my headphones are nothing special, cheap Sennheizers HD180. Any advice?
