I have a set of JVC SK-90 speakers I purchased in 1983 and was wondering if anyone has any comments relating to sound quality or detailed specifications. They are in great shape and I have seen them in numerous locations years ago, but cannot find any information on the web about them. Thanks!

I will try to get some pictures of them up soon. I currently have Pioneer woofers in them because the JVC's need new surrounds, which I am doing now. The surrounds are inverted / upside down. and nobody has the correct replacement, a real chore to refoam but I think it will be worth it.

Here is an update with pictures. Notice the inverted surround. That is a Pioneer replacement woofer in the picture.

Enlosure- Bass Reflex
Power Rating - 100 Watts RMS
Impedance - 8 ohms
Height - 26 1/2"
Width - 15"
Depth - 13"
Weight - Approximately 50 lbs.

I contacted JVC today to request information on the speakers and was informed that the data they have available is from 1985 to present. I thought this may help someone else in the future.

Another update with a picture of someone elses.

Your JVC's look great! I'll bet that they sound similar to the JBL L100 or the JBL 4412 Studio Monitors.

Thanks tensleep, I should have my woofers back in this weekend and get a chance to break them in, it has been a while since I have been able to listen to them. I cannot say whether or not they sound like the JBL's or not, but I may take them to a friends place and compare them. I was hoping to get another persons opinion who has heard them also, since everyone has different opinions on what sounds good.

Hi to all, I finally finished the refoam on my JVC's and wanted to provide some updated pictures. They sound great and I will probably break them in a few more hours before I give them a dose of power. By the way, the inverted surrounds were a real chore, if anyone needs some tips let me know. :music:

JVC SK-90 Vintage Speakers

I have such a set of speakers. I've replaced the sub-woofer on them about 5 years ago, and I'm glad I held on to them all these years. Once I ran a surround sound system through them, they absolutely rock! Here are recent photos. The new audio technology really brings out the richness of the sound these bad babies can produce, that's for sure

I'm glad to here that someone has had the opportunity to here these fine speakers. I have been listening to mine occasionally and actually cranked them up a bit last weekend for my buddy, he was shocked at the sound. I have heard that they sound like JBL L100, 4310's, or the 4412's but I have not had the chance to do a side by side comparison.

If you get a chance to post some pics that would be great. Do you still have your original woofers? They are a pain to refoam, but I am glad that I did mine. I had a pair of nice Pioneer woofers in their place for a few years and was happy, but nothing seems to beat the originals. Enjoy!

I have a pair of these that i use as my "Party" Speakers when required. Cheap components but a "decent" sound and they need stands to show their best. The ones i have were built here in NZ under licence to JVC. Quite good cabinets and pretty heavy too. Absolutely no comparison to my JBL L100T/S speakers. Definitely no JVC Zero series competitor. Tweeters extend to 40kHz and sound pretty good. These speakers came with the Mid Range JVC Systems of the mid 80s.

Thanks for the input. At least you have the JBL's to compare with. My comment only indicates what others have said.

I replaced the woofers about 5 years ago, don't remember which brand though. I had to widen the slot slightly to fit them, but they still sound incredible. I have a powered sub-woofer connected to the AVR 5.1 system, and the JVC's are connected to the "front" jacks with "large" setting. The crossover settings are (I believe) 120Hz. What a combination! I use cheap bookshelf speakers for the rear surrounds, by the way

I just was wondering, have you had to refoam the woofers? As far as I can tell these speakers were not part of a sytem sold here in the USA, and I purchased mine separately in 1983, and thought they were available from 81-83. The price was not even close to your JBL's but I can't remember how much I did pay. Have you taken yours apart at all? I was wondering if the same drivers are in mine as compared yours. Anyhow, just my two cents.

Hi,yes i had to get them refoamed at a speaker specialist here in Auckland NZ. I actually admired them as a kid in the early/mid 80s and managed to pick up my pr(needing new surrounds)for $10NZ. They are mint bar a problem with one of the push in terminals on the rear. They definitely have the same drivers as yours and the adjustable level controls. A bit sad when at first you think you have some awesome cast woofer to find its just a fake plastic "cover". Still...they do sound great and can take quite a bit of power....i use them at family functions/parties with a 200W RMS/ch Perreaux Power Amp. Pretty heavy though due to the pretty thick MDF/Particle board they use for the cabinets. Its definitely not the woofer hahaha. They were definitely sold as part of a JVC system of that time. Here in NZ JVC was competing with Akai and Technics for Joe Averages dollar. Ill take some shots of mine and put them up on here. Im a bit of a fan of these old 80s speakers...great bang for buck these days. I also use a pair of Pioneer S-710s and Onkyo D66X's. These speakers do Rotation on my Laptop/Vintage 80s setup.

A little more info is always good. What I find odd is that you have some Onkyo D66's and I have a pair of Onkyo D77's I purchased in 1985 while in Okinawa Japan, and you have some Pioneer C-710's and I have some Pioneer CS-63 DX's. It appears as if our speaker tastes are similar. I think our age difference is about 20 years off though. I added a few more pics of my JVC's.
