JVC speakers

Found these JVC SK-1000 speakers at the TS. They were cheap and in great condition. Looked them up and the opinions were mixed. Some say they are great sounding high end speakers while others say they are just so-so. They are heavy and well made but need to be refoamed. Any opinions on them?

There were JVC speakers and there were JVC speakers. Those look OK. Not junk, but not "high end" (although if those aluminum "trim rings" are really metal and are actually part of the drivers - they might be cut from better cloth than I am thinking).

Heck, I wouldn't hesitate to refoam them. If they're fairly sensitive, they might just be "great for tube amps"!

I would definitely re-foam them just to give them an audition. I'm sure you got them fairly cheap and could always sell them on CL. I have a pair of JVC SK-90's that I am trying to get an opinion on, other than my own, I have always liked them since I purchase in the early 80's. What I did find interesting though is the reply that mhardy6647 posted, the links to the pictures from Victor. I have a set of Onkyo D-77's that look almost exactly like the Zero-FX1/FX3/FX5's, I was wondering if mhardy6647 might provide a bit of input on that for me, maybe send me a private message I am sorry to get off topic, re-foam and try them.

I don't think those are trim rings but cast baskets and a dome tweet. Refoam and enjoy. Not crap IMHO.

The trim rings on my JVC's are not part of the speaker, but my Onyo's are part of it. I attached a pic of the Onkyo's after the re-foam.

I looked at the woofers. The trim rings are not part of the speaker. The speakers are stamped steel with large magnets. They are nothing special but not cheap either.

That is OK, my JVC's are just a trim ring also. The thing that I notice on mine, if my memory serves me correctly, is that the foam surround is inverted / upside down. I do not know if that makes any difference in the sound quality or if it is an issue with the design. The surround keeps the voice coil centered among other things.
