hi!

i came across very nice pair of SX-3, really nice condidion except for the woofers, they have been replaced with some red foam el-cheapo woofers.

are these speakers worth the effort of finding some original woofers or should i let it go?
anybody know what woofers are supposed to go in there?

regards fredrik

I could not find a single "sold" listing for the SX-3, so value, which would normally be a deciding factor in a situation like this, is an unknown. And, unfortunately, that rarity also makes the prospect of finding replacement woofers even tougher. Unless those drivers were used in other JVC models, this could be a no-go. And if the cabinets have been modified to accommodate the current components, the complexity compounds.

So the decision to rebuild these will depend on how dear these are to you. Chances are good that even if you are able to find the woofers and repair the cabinets, you will have invested far, far more than they are worth on the open market. Tough decision.

Thanks all!

No the cabinets are in great shape thats why i wanted to fix them up. No modifications just the woofers replaced.

They look pretty serious for beeing JVC

Those are Japanese market, so rare in the states. Most of the really great JVC gear stayed in Japan and some in Europe. You might want to check out Jauce.com, (Japan yahoo auctions) and see if there's any drivers for these. I patrol that site regularly, lots of amazing gear we mostly won't see here unless you buy it and have it shipped.
JVC made some incredible hi end gear.

I have a pair of the SX-3's. I enjoy them very much, probably will not let them go as they are a great sounding 2 way speaker. Currently being driven by a Pilot tube amp and sounding very detailed (they are pretty efficient as well - the pilot probably gives about 8 watts maybe). They also sounded great with SS equipment. Not sure where you would find replacements as I've never hunted around for them, but good luck. I think the woofer has a doped edge and paper cone. I'd be glad to post a woofer ID if you need it too.

I live i Sweden tho
But i cant say i've seen this model before.
Been into this hobby since Early 90's
They are heavy , well made.
Tweeters look serious.

well i found what woofers are currently mounted .
it appears to be "Pro Audio SW1030"
sorry the site is in swedish but i think the specs are self explanatory.

i hate when ppl throw in this stuff and shoves the originals in the trash bin. they never heard of refoaming?

Edit: well i forgot to post the link :)

I'll take a couple pictures of the woofers and post them. Working all this week and it's busy but I'll try to do it as soon as possible. At one time there was a stereo review article online about this model, not sure if it's still out there.

Sorry for the long delay in getting these pictures up. Hope they help in finding a replacement for you. I think the woofer magnet picture came out pretty well and ID information should be clear. I noted an ID # of SK 2192G and a possible manufacturer code of 865026? last number could be a zero, not sure but first 3 should be the manufacturer code (not seeing it with a quick search of the internet). Hopefully someone on the forums can help?

been trying to find these woofs for a while now:) lol
judging by pictures the SX-5 also uses this woofer? atleast very similar.

Yeah, it's going to be a journey for you I think. Hopefully worth it and I still believe I will not be selling mine for quite some time - I do like them a lot. I did a brief check after posting the pictures and found a similar woofer but in a later model. 10" with doped surround but a different color and an 8 ohm impedance instead of 4. I believe JVC manufactured drivers but my code didn't come up as JVC (at least with the online codes I found).
I'll take a look at the SX 5 online tonight.

Hello Fredrik.. I know it's been awhile since you posted about this, but I have a set of woofers, if you are still looking for them. Bought the speakers and a tweeter was dead, the woofers worked fine, the cabinets not so clean, so I stripped them, then tossed the cabs. Regards Dave

The SX-3 was such a hit in japan that JVC couldn't manufacture it quick enough and people had to wait to get one. So they were very busy satisfying japanese customers, no wonder it was not exported.

Source of my claim: contemporary japanese magazines.

The SX3 speaker system is a hot topic in the audio world right now. It would not be an exaggeration to say that it was the first hit for Victor, who has been making speaker systems for a long time. There is a strong view that Victor's tradition and ability as a manufacturer specializing in audio equipment have borne fruit. However, I ...... that half of the current topic is the excellence of this product, and the other half is the dissatisfaction of having to wait several months to order because of a shortage of products. When this happens, it seems that the number of enthusiasts who crave SX3 is increasing rapidly.

The fact that the SX3 can't keep up with production leads to an explanation of the nature of this speaker system and the significance of a large manufacturer like Victor making such a product. In other words, this system has a strong hand-built character that requires a great deal of elaborate work. I have always said that audio equipment cannot be the best product based on the theory, design technology, and production technology of the streets, but this system seems to be alive with the high technology that combines the obsession and passion for sound of the creator that transcends such common sense, the trial and error backed by the many ideas and experiments that emanate from it, and combines it into a single product with a high degree of perfection. The creator of this speaker system is Masamichi Hayashi, who is the core of the company's speaker technology, and his passion for making speakers is extraordinary. However, until now, to be honest, despite his passion, exploration efforts, and accumulation of technology, it has not been enough to convince us of the sound of the speakers. It can be said that his unique tenacity has endured the unpopularity of the past, and humbly and carefully returned to the starting line several times to correctly grasp the two characteristics of the speaker as an acoustic converter and the speaker as a speaker that plays music, and created this SX3. At the same time, Victor deserves praise for warmly protecting the free creativity of human beings and giving them room for development. It is no exaggeration to say that without this kind of constitution, we will not be able to survive the coming times as an audio manufacturer. Technology is a systematic product of human accumulation, but it should always be inspired by ideas and move forward. Ideas are the result of creativity, which is a contingent element given to us by God, and is the foundation of all creation. I believe that great ideas come from great talent and the environment in which that talent blossoms. Not only the sound itself, but also the converter of the speaker created by humans is composed of complex elements that have not all been analyzed, so if we only use existing theories and technologies to deal with this, we will only be able to produce a product.

The ideas that can be seen throughout the SX3 and the new positive originality that emerged from a wealth of experimentation are highly commendable from my point of view. However, such an attitude does not mean that it will make a good product, and I do not mean that the SX3 is the best speaker system.
After all, the SX3 was created as a product that benefits manufacturers, so there are many restrictions and compromises. Naturally, it was created under the conditions of a small (but practically medium-sized) bookshelf system, which is the most popular form on the market, with a retail price of less than 30,000 yen, and as a result, there are naturally limits to large systems that can reproduce intense acoustics and music that requires such sounds. However, we assure you that it is one of the best products in this range. 2-way 25cm woofer and soft dome tweeter. The elaborate assembly of the system with elaborate materials and craftsmanship reproduces a smooth, deep mid and high frequency and stereophonic presence based on a very rich and realistic bass.
