JVC VL-5 auto-return repair help needed

Hi all,

I got JVC VL-5 belt-drive turntable, installed the new belt (old one was completely disintegrated), balanced the arm, set the weight, etc etc. Bottom line it works fine manually.

I cannot figure out functionality of the cueing lever. It does not work properly on this table. I can see the mechanism under the platter engaging (when everything is taken apart), but the arm does not lift when I push the lever, nor does the arm lift when the record ends - it kind of lifts a bit, goes back 2 inches and drops back onto the record.

I do not see anything broken. I removed the bottom cover - I can see the metal part that's supposed to push the little hydraulic lifter. I don't understand why it's not engaging - the gears under the platter seem to be engaging when Cue lever is pushed.

Service manual is on VE database is essentially a copy of the user manual, so not much of help...

Just wanted to revive this thread.

I cleaned the auto-up mechanisms with isopropyl alcohol, replaced dampening fluid in the cue rod cylinder with 300,000 fluid.

So the mechanisms work like a charm, you can see the cue rod moving up and down, EXCEPT it doesn't reach the arm. In the 'UP' position it stops flush with the metal cue guide on the arm. In the 'DOWN' position, it goes down a few millimeters.

I looked at the cuing mechanism - the cue rod can definitely be pushed another 2-3mm easily. I don't see any adjustments in the mechanism. There is something underneath the cam wheel that pushes down onto the long metal piece, which in turn pushes the cue rod up on the other end.

Would it make sense to remove the cam wheel in this case, or am I missing something simple? Thanks!
 
We found the problem with so much help of VE member who helped originally with instructions on how to disassemble and clean the table. There used to be a rubber ball on top of the cue rod, which disintegrated over time. Now I need to find a similar sized piece of rubber or teflon, and glue it there. Problem solved.
