Kappa 9 ?

Anybody know what difference if any there is between the Polydome K and the Kappa Polydome. They look the same just named differently. Is one used in the later 9.1 or 9.2 series, possibly. I'm wondering because a fellow has a pair and states the polydomes were bought from Infinity about 6 years ago and he replaced the ones in his Kappa 9.

The Polydome K was from the original Kappa series and the Kappa Polydome was from the .1 Kappas. AFAIK they should be the same electronically speaking, but the mold of the frame of the Kappa Polydome is a little different than the Polydome K. I seem to remember that the Kappa Polydome does not allow the backwave to pass through, thus not allowing for the dipole function in the original Kappas, but I am not 100% certain on that.

There seem to be two varieties of each. There is actually a version of the smaller diameter Polydome first seen in the RS series, that is also labeled "Polydome K", as well as the more common one used in the Kappas. A later version of the Kappa Polydome had a mesh behind the driver to help prevent damage to the diaphragm.

Ah, thanks a lot. These polydomes have the mesh so must be the later version. So, they don't fire through the back of the speaker like the original design. Thanks again.

I believe the ones with the mesh could be backfired by removing the felt pad on the back of the magnet exposing the hole in the middle so that they could be used in the original and backfire as well.....
 
The Kappa Polydome has microkopic elemtens of capton mixed with continous strands of polydroyplene to add stiffness to it. It is a better driver than the new polydome hence its tranship response is much true than from the other polydome.

The other polydome adds more mass to it ( Polypropylene too), but it can't react as fast in the frequency range than the old one.

Both kappa series polydome diaphragms have the same part # and are interchangeable for both series as i was told by infinity

I was also told by Infinity they were the same minus the protective covering the new one has...

I am of the mindset that I like things orginal, so I always just wait till I see onr come up for sell in good condition used. Some speakers are pretty hard to find used drivers to replace faulty ones, I had a Audax tweeter go bad on me on my PL III speakers I just waited and kept up searching and then Bamm, a pair came up looked just like new, for 24 dollars for the pair. No one even bid against me I guess hardly anyone knew what they were for or they didn't care!
 
I didnt mean to be rude , but it is phunny ..
I have to wonder if one were to do an experiment and use two pairs of kappas from the original series . { one with originals and one w replcement polydomes from the second series } , Place them both behind an acousticaly transparent curtain , could anyone actually tell which was which 10 times out of 10 ?
 
I have no idea. But when it comes to an investment that you can enjoy, usually audio equipment that has good condition working OEM parts they will be worth more money when you go to sell them. If you ever want to sell an item to move up or down it makes sense to keep your equipment in the best of condition with all OEM parts, other than things like caps and resistors and stuff like that.
