Karlson (?) cabinet identification

found this thing this weekend. Looks like a Karlson cabinet. But there are some chips and nicks and such. Was wondering if this was homemade or legit?

Is there any identification on these?

Has a university 2601 duplex driver in it, which had a small rim tear I tried to coffee filter and aleen’s From behind.

Those saw cut vents are pretty cool.

That’s a perfect speaker for it.

I believe most of these were built by hobbyists. I do remember reading that some were “pro” built.

I have a pair that had EV Trxb12s in them. I pulled the EVs to put them into Acousta-stat cabs.

I haven’t seen the saw cut vents before. I don’t think mine are as tall, I think your risers are custom.

Somebody's DIY 12K.

A factory(or at least some of them) 12K actually has a dozen small holes where you see the saw cuts on the OP example.

A genuine Karlson built cabinet came with a label inside.

I got this and an Electro Voice Aristocrat at the same spot—seems like both have a tacked on riser base by the owner, who added a dark dark stain and finish to both to blend the base and cabinet. Started the process of stripping, and removing the base will be next.

I was curious: do people recap duplex speakers,typically? Is it possible?

Original cap should be an oil cap, it may test perfectly fine, while a newer or boutique cap may offer a bit better sound.

The cut sheet has a nice cutaway view of the entire internal layout.

Your cabinets look identical to my K12s - which as far as I can tell were built using the plans in the July 1958 issue of Popular Mechanics.

I agree with @biscuithead . Those speakers should work nicely. Hope you enjoy them!

Pretty impressive transformation as I remove the base someone had added, strip off that deep brown stain.

She is cleaning up nicely.

How do people slip grilles into these things behind the “curtain” panels?

Even with my ham fisted shellac technique this thing is shaping up pretty well.

I’m supposed to pick up a mate to this one this weekend, if it doesn’t fall through.

Just need to track down another 6201.

Found another not exactly matched k12.

Putting a university 6201 in both. One of the university 6201 seems to have an issue with the high frequency adjustment: sounds fine when the pot is turned all the way up, but highs cut out completely if the dial is turned at all.
Is this a problem with the pot? Or a capacitor problem?

anyone know the spec of the original pot and/or a suitable replacement?

Speaker is rated at 6-12ohm/20w - I have some Dayton L-pads that didnt work out on anotehr project that are 8ohm/15w--is that a close enough match?

I may re-order anyway for longer shaft length, or else it is going to be a creative install.

All help with wiring/specs appreciated.

2 rounds of deoxit showed notable improvement. maybe try a couple more.
