Kef 102.2 refurbish question

Hi guys,

I'm currently re-foaming a pair of kef 102.2 speakers and I was wondering what else I could do to prolong their life.

I'm thinking about replacing all the 30 years old capacitors on the crossover. And also replacing the ferrofluid in the tweeters.

Is there anything else? the rubber surround on the mid-range unit is fine.

I'm not sure I'd replace the ferrofluid unless you know for sure that there's a problem. But I'd definitely replace the caps.

Here's a thread on another forum from someone who did ferrofluid replacement. It's unclear what brand/model he was working with, but maybe it'll be of help to you.
 
Seems like you have considered everything to give them life beyond the next 20 years. Definitely ferro fluid, if the surrounds on any drivers look questionable, do them now while OE style surrounds are still available.

Is it because I run the risk of damaging the tweeter when I disassemble it?

Any time you disassemble a driver you run the risk of damage. Not all speakers that use ferrofluid will need it replaced. I'd do that last - refoam the woofers, replace the caps, then play them and see if anything is lacking.
 
Ferro fluid from 1990-1994 (25-29 years ago!) is always going to be suspect. I believe it's really hard to know what a tweeter should sound like if you've never heard a good one of the exact same type. Yes, I acknowledge there is risk, so I might 'practice' first with a cheap tweeter of similar design so one knows tools and methods required for success. YouTube has tons of great videos on the subject, spend a fair amount of time watching some of those.
