KEF 103.2 Recap Question

Hello Guys,

I'm about to undertake recapping a set of KEF 103.2's for a good friend of mine. I'm hopeful that you guys can shed a little light in the corners of this project so to speak, as it seems info is pretty scarce on the web.

Firstly, the resistor in R9 in badly corroded, it should be changed but you can't read it in either crossover anymore. I can't find a proper schematic online, just a hand written one that doesn't label where the components are in the circuit. Does anybody know what the value for R9 is?

I'll post pictures outlining the resistor on the circuit board as well as the hand drawn schematic.

The second thing is he bought the kit from falcon acoustics, which upon arrival I noticed doesn't include caps for the protection circuit. Do you guys think I should test them and baring no issues leave it be? Or just change them out?

Hey Guys,

Here's the pictures, I'd really appreciate some feedback!

Picture 1 shows the full board, the rectangle highlights the resistor I need to source, the ovals show the caps that weren't included in the kit.

Picture 2 is a close up on the resistor.

Picture 3 is the only schematic I've been able to find

Can you figure it out by process of elimination against the schematic? If you know you have a 1R5, a 10R, etc. it must be one of the other ones.

Hi, I can tell you I never replaced the items you have circled in the ovals when I recently recapped my 103.2's. We replaced all of the "larger" caps and fixed the corroded traces on the bottom side of the board... @leesonic has some very good threads detailing that repair. I had what appeared to be a dead woofer in both speakers, but it was just leaking caps. Re-capping the larger ones and repairing the traces made them sing again!

Did you ever figure this out? I just picked up a pair of 103.2's and am having similar problems to others where the woofer is dead. I'm pretty much a noob to this all, but can use a soldering iron. How difficult was it to recap these and repair the traces if they are corroded? Just trying to see if it is doable by myself. Thanks in advance.

It’s not super easy, but you might get lucky. I’ve gone into mine twice now and it’s still not fixed. The hard part is identifying what traces need repair, and then doing the repair.

I've had to do the same. Mine were pretty straightforward, just fill in all the corroded traces with new wire, and the re-capping wasn't bad. Luckily my mom builds airplane circuit boards for a living and is an expert solderer, so I've got it made there! I'm trying to get her to repair stereo gear when she retires here in a few years, LOL!

Got it, thanks. Guess I’ll have to see how bad it is. One more question for you guys, which recap would you do and will there be a big difference between them? I’ve see three ways so far:

1) falcon acoustics
2) Lee sonic’s
3) budget recap build (link below)

So I pulled the crossover. Not so lucky. Corrosion ate right through the traces. Pics of before and after are below. So to fix this I have to solder some capacitor leads where the traces were?
