Hah thanks! Yep I've read that one a couple of times;) I understand now which components make up the protection circuit. Still it seems that in some crossovers the 2 x 300 mfd caps are in line with the woofer and in others (mine) on the overall input. I guess the option now is to recap all or none at all as I can't see anything tell tale wrong...
 
Jon how old are the speakers? Even with the "ALLCAPS" caps being better than the black E caps used earlier. E Caps age and dry out. Best to replace the caps. The connectors to the LED how bad are they? A picture would help. To measure ESR of the cap a different type of meter is needed. The cap can read within the value range +/- 20%, but have high internal resistance.
