Kef 103/3 x4 for $300 w/ stands

canuckaudiog

On a quest for high fidelity
Hey guys,

I may have an opportunity to buy 4 Kef 103/3 speakers with a pair of stands for $300.

The ad has been up for 4 days already so I don't know if they're still available (waiting to call, as it's early) but I wanted to know what you guys thought of the deal?

Nice speakers. $300 is about what they are worth in great shape with the Kube. Possible issues:

No Kube: They were designed to play with the Kube in circuit and sound wrong without it. Finding a spare one is possible but not too easy

Tweeters: The T33 II tweeters are known to have problems with the ferrofluid drying up

Woofers: they have foam donuts around the voice coli that have usually rotted out by now which ruins the seal and therefore the bass response. A new donut is cheap, changing it is a PITA.

i'd say make an offer

those sell for anywhere from $200-$400 per PAIR, with stands, depending on condition.

I'm going to call in about an hour and see what I can come up with. I figure if there is no Kube I will offer $200 and if its there I'll try for $250. I understand the stands are important for the sound as well.

I'll let you know how it goes when I make the call. Thanks guys.

I just got off the phone with the guy.

He has them still, and has stands for both pairs and one Kube. He says he had the other one just doesn't know exactly where it is, so I am going to get him to look for the other one.

I managed to strike a deal for $275 which is nice, helps a little. They are going to be picked up tonight, and either brought home tonight or tomorrow.

I'll keep you guys posted.

Great deal, I did mean the going price was around $300/pair so you got a fair price plus lots if free spares!

You could run both pairs of the same amp that had the Kube connected but since the speakers are 4 ohm and the Kube can add quite a bass boost that might be a bad idea

I'm thinking worst case scenario I pick up a programmable EQ and match the frequency response of the one with the Kube. I am able to measure the speakers so, won't be much problem. But I hope he can find them, getting two complete sets for this price would be a great deal.

But yes, even then I do have spares. I'll have to try running the Kube with both sets, see how that turns out. I could just wire the speakers in series and see how that goes?

Edit:

And, in regards to the restoration, well, I am currently restoring a set of 104/2's so, I figure I've got some experience already :)

Little update. Wife just called, and she now has them!

Unfortunately, the second Kube couldn't be found. The guy did say though if he finds it, he will contact me. So, I guess I'll have to hold out a bit for that but that's OK, at least it's potentially somewhere and I may get it.

Anyway, when the speakers get home I will get some pictures and all that fun stuff.

:thmbsp:Those Kefs' love power....Mine are driven with a SoundCraftman pro-power 4 (a 2ohm rated amp and.........dips in that range. AND they want more. I also don't run that static box ( kube). just my pennies Dave

Thanks Dave. I'll definitely try them without the Kube just to see, although according to the manual the crossover was designed to be used with the Kube, so it's hard for me to see why it would sound good that way. But I'll find out for myself.

Luckily I've got plenty of power for these speakers, a Carver M1.5 puts out 350W @ 8 ohms and 500W @ 4 ohms so it should run these speakers just fine.

Since the Kube is an equaliser, wouldn't it be possible in this day and age to analyse the difference that the Kube makes and duplicate it with a digital box of some type?

I think so. If I take measurements of one speaker with the kube and one without, then use an EQ to mimic the response curve, I should theoretically achieve the same result. At that point it would come down to the quality of the EQ.
