KEF 103/4 or DCM Time Window 1 for two channel system?

chrisand4

Not cheap, just thrifty..
I'm going to have a chance to demo both of these, but I was looking for some general opinions on them.

They are both roughly the same price, so no worries there. I'll be using them with my Sansui AU-9500, listening mostly to vinyl, 70's stuff (classic rock/prog rock). I do occasionally listen to some classical and jazz too.

So, which would you choose?

I'm a big fan of DCM TimeWindows, so I'd be inclined to pick them myself, but those Kef's should be pretty damn good, and I'm sure many would pick those. I think you'll need to demo them yourself to know for sure.

The TimeWindows have a huge sound stage that you'd never expect just looking at them, and I bet they'd have the advantage there, but the Kef's probably have an edge in detail.

I should add, the Kef's will probably win in the bass as well, but be forewarned, both speakers are difficult to work on, but the Kef's are more likely to need work, as the internal woofers have foam surrounds that will need work at some point unless they've been done before. The TimeWindows have rubber surrounds and don't need to be replaced, but they too are quite difficult to get into if you did ever need to. I forgot to add, on the Kef's, you cannot see the internal woofers so it's nearly impossible to know the condition of them, and the drivers can be ruined if the owner continued using them with wasted foam surrounds.

Having owned the TimeWindow 1a and also owning a set of Kef 104/2s, I'd pick the Kefs myself. But the Kefs are definitely going to require more work to get back to factory sound. It all depends on how handy you are.

+2 on what 89Grand said... I have TF700's and KEF 107's... somewhat different from what you are considering, but I think fit with what 89'er presented!

They will both be in working condition, I actually refoamed the KEFs myself, they belong to a friend of mine. I just haven't got to do any serious listening to them yet.

I already own the Time Windows, but I am out of town, and haven't got to listen to them since the night I brought them home (only around 10 mins to verify they worked.)
