KEF 104/2 Tweeter replacement

Hi all! long time no posts! I recently had a pair of KEF 104/2 speakers given to me and they are in good condition except the tweeters are blown. The T33 tweeter from KEF is discontinued. Anyone have any replacement stories to share???

The ferrofliud on those tends to harden hindering voice coil movement. They probably are damaged and need to be replaced however I'd inspect the voice coil for damage and try removing hardened ferrofluid to see if they "free up".
I ended up installing these 4 ohm Audax as the vc wire was pulled off its former. Once you jettison the faceplate, a little dremel grinding helps it conform to the interior baffle. ihttp://www.madisound.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=45_229_324&products_id=374

Good call! The voice coils actually look OK but the ferrofluid is hard and sticky. What should I use to remove it and should I re-assemble the tweeter dry?

They may look okay but you need to measure to see if they register an impedence of around 4 ohms. Use what ever will fit in the magnet gap to remove the "fluid". If you are lucky they might play music once again albiet out of original tolerance.

Before going to a lot of effort to get the ferro out, measure the coils and make sure they're OK.

Replacing them with another unit is going to require xover mods.
The T33's do pop up on sleazebay sometimes; I had 104/2 until about 18mo ago and was looking to get anther set for this reason, though knowing me, if they had gone, I would have just gone active with them with a new set of tweets.

The coils are shot. Oh well. I read that the Morel MDT29 will work as a replacement as well as Tubed recommendation for Audix tweets. I will contemplate that but knowing how anal I am I think I'll wait for a pair on ePay. This will be a back up pair any way as I aready have a set of 104/2s on my main rig. Thanks for the input. I was stuck! Dang! I haven't posted in over a year. Time to get back in the groove!!!!
