Kef 104/2 which amplifier ?

vin-ta-ge

I recently bought a very nice pair of Kef 104/2 from original owner (1989) and I would like to know which amplifier to use with these speakers.
I actualy have the Definitive Sansui series (BA 2000 / CA 2000 / TU 9900).
Is the BA 2000 is a good amplifier for the 104/2 ?
The 104/2 are 4 Ohms load.

Thanks for your suggestion.:thmbsp:

The 104.2 are 4 Ohms but purely resistive and very stable. In many ways they are easier to drive than many speakers with 6 or 8 Ohm ratings as some of those have nasty reactive elements to the load and can drop to 2 Ohms or less at some frequencies. They are also quite efficient for a British speaker so they will not tax a good amp that has a 4 Ohm rating.

None of that means that they don't respond to a real good sounding muscle amp.

Because they do.

It does however mean that they will sound good with a very wide range of amps. The emphasis has to be on good sounding. The better the amp,the better the 104.2s will respond. They are lovely sounding speakers.

Agreed, they are very revealing speakers and a little forward sounding so you don't want to use a mediocre amp (or source). They would sound great when we paired them with a little Cyrus or Audiolab integrated but it was something else again with a 300w/ch Perreaux!

I have used an Adcom gfa-5400 (probably needs recapping), then I picked up a Yamaha C65/M65 set and found an improvement in clarity, stereo imaging, and channel separation. I thought I was done upgrading and then I found a deal on a NAD 2200 power envelope amp that I couldn’t pass up. I’m baffled by how much more impressive the NAD 2200 makes these KEF 104/2’s sound. The bass has more punch, slam, and sustain. The very conservatively rated NAD 2200 (100wpc @8 ohms) sounds like 1.5-2 times the amp as the Yamaha M65. It’s time to get these amps bench tested and bias set. NAD fanboy for now
