KEF 104aB B200 SP1039

Lee, I just read your posting on restoration of your KEF 104ab. Nice job. Did you find any replacement for the bitumen lining?

I also noticed you had Mission 770s in one of your pictures. When I purchased my KEF Calinda speakers in 1979, my final 4 speakers were the Calinda, the 104ab, the 770 and the Tannoy T185 Dorset. It was a tough choice between these 4.

I am curious how you compare the KEF with the Mission.

No replacement for the bitumen lining. I did have something similar to Dynamat, but then my friend needed it for his car.

As for the KEF vs. Mission, it's a very close horse race. Certainly, these two are two pairs of speakers that I will never sell. They have a sort of sentimental value for me as well. My mom used to have a pair of 104aBs, and she would pull the grills off and let me watch the woofers move, this was probably due to warped records more than anything. The Missions, my dad used to take me to HiFi shows, and I remember hearing them on the Mission stand, fed by their own pre and power amps, the source being the usual Linn Sondek/Ittok/Assac combination. The Missions probably have a little bit more bass extension and and little bit more very high treble. The KEFs had a little bit more detailed midrange. Put both pairs on together, and it's heaven...

Willys Hi Fi recommends the Monacor SPM-205 as a replacement driver for the Kef B200 and Dalesford D50/200.

The Dalesford D100/200 is another alternative.

Fried used the Kef B200 SP1022 in his model H transmission line subwoofers.
They were short lived because of the problems of the voice coils bottoming out in the enclosures.
The xmax was too short to reproduce the low frequencies at high spl. required in transmission lines.
 
I would think the smaller magnet versions of the B200 would work in this speaker until you could find the correct SP1039s. That's what I would do.
