KEF 105.4 In the House!

Back from a day-trip to Harrisonburg, VA ... Thanks everybody for the feedback - How long do you think it'll take to "break them in"

I'm only feeding them 60-80 watts with the Jolida tubes but they do sound quite nice so far. Playing all over the map - Emma is running through her 80s Favs from Christopher Cross and Donnie Iris (and many dance hits) to me with Boz Scaggs (Thanks to you), The Blue Nile, Daniel Lanois, The Hilliard Ensemble and Jan Garbarek ...Stones (Moonlight Mile) and on and on ..

Break in should be subtle and within a few hours you should already have them at least 90% broken in. When I recapped speakers, specifically with Alcaps, I did not experience much if any break in.

Got it - we've been real pleased so far - I kinda figured they were done.

That said, tonight I started playing some of the Elton John Remasters - Self-titled, and Tumbleweed Connection - gorgeous! Think there's any truth to playing british music on British speakers? I was playing David Sylvian and some other stuff - but even older Mel Torme sounds lush ...

If you can find Mel Torme Swings Shubert Alley, you've found the ultimate.

Found a copy (CD) - its on the way, thanks!

We watched American Hustle downstairs Saturday night, so sunday I played a lot of Duke Ellington ... cool stuff on the KEFs!

I'll really be interested if you like that Mel as much as I do. I lucked into a fancy japanese vinyl pressing and between the arrangements, the band and Mel in that era, it's an amazing piece that the KEFs will really show off.

I did find it on VERVE CD.
Running around doing things before dinner - no time for a serious listen now, but - wow, what a sound, and what a voice!! Thanks for the tip!

Thank you for this topic, i've done the same, only the crossover is a bit different than yours, on C4 i got a 120 MFD, not 80.
Maybe your crossover is changed, here, some foto, s.

The old crossover with the values written on it :

The old ones that came off i have marked, so i can always put them back on the original place.

Note: The old elcap's had a few 150 volt one's , these where not available in the alcap's. Replacement are now 100 volt instead.

Thanks so much Willem-57 - are you UK based or elsewhere?

I notice you have what appears to be a relay in a case on the far left-center ... (Iron core inductor?)

Hi, i am from the Netherlands, Europe.

Yes, your crossover is a little different, Kef Always works with SP numbers, mine crossover is SP1129. That number is written on the back:

As you can see i also had a hot resistor, happened with the former owner, plaid too loud with a small 20 watt amp. Never do that, tweeter damage is the result.:nono:

I find it a very good speaker, excellent imaging and in my modest dutch room, 5 x 7 meters, the bass is enough. Also a design with a closed baschamber is easily placable.

I don't know, i am not mutch of a technic guy, can do some things, but i have not enough knowledge.:scratch2:

Have you also the new alcap's 100 volt instead of the old 150 volt ones?

Thank you!
It's only a part of it, there are also carpets on the floor and my ceiling is made of an absorbing material, so the acoustic is rather good.

I,ve also have a pair of these:

Looks gorgeous! but - I think you need more plants there ..!

I asked on the SpeakerTalk forum about the difference in capacitators and the relay, answer:

The big capacitors are all in parallel which adds up their capacitance, so you had 480uF in series with the bass unit. This interacted with the inductance and rolloff of the bass unit/box to give the efficiency of a reflex design with the rolloff of a sealed box. The difference in value to 440uF (-8%) is probably just due to a different batch of B200s and their parameters.

Some people used to short circuit these capacitors in the hope it improved the sound because older amps used to have output through a capacitor, and any capacitor is "bad". However I prefer to trust the Kef designers, who knew what they were doing far better than the ex-fridge salesmen who used to write low end hi-fi magazines.

The relay is presumably controlled by the S-Stop circuitry and will cut down the input to a low value to protect the drivers when the input goes beyond 200W for a length of time or something like that.

Hjames, wanna ask you about the changed sound with the new Allcaps.
I find that the speakers have been changed a bit in their sound, especially the higher regions are more coming out and the s sounds of some singers (f.i. sinatra) are more on the foreground. The same with violin music, the violins are more coming out, i mean, looks like the speaker has become more sensitive and more 'unforgiving', when a recording is not so good than this is now mutch more notable as with the old capacitators, but when it's good, than can it be magic!

What are your findings?

When I first got them, the mids and highs were "murky" - not particularly distinctive, sonically. After I replaced the caps, the mids and highs were clearer, fuller, more balanced to the bass, and the bass was more clear as well.
Now, they are not as painful on bad recordings as my JBL 3ways (with the walnut midhorns, pro drivers and the slot tweeters) - but it is easier to hear when recording is murky or poorly mixed now.

Of course I run mine with a 60w integrated tube amp - that does smooth the sound a bit compared to how a more powerful transistor amp would sound..

Thx, for the reply,
i think i have simulair findings as you have. My 105.4's are playing with an Accuphase E405 from 1990. It is a neutral sounding amp with lots of reserve.
I am now on the english speakertalk forum how to decide witch version i got of the RR105.4, there where 2 versions with different crossovers.
Greetings, Willem.
