KEF C80 Midrange Drive Crackle

Stochastic

New Member
Hi,

This is my first post here. I recently acquired a set of KEF C80 speakers. They sound wonderful except my right speakers midrange makes a crackling noise at certain frequencies regardless of volume. From my reading I think this is a B160 midrange. Is there a way to repair this speaker or should I replace it. If I should replace it where would I get the correct replacement?

It's possible that the voice coil is rubbing on the magnet. You could test it by pushing on the centre of the cone and listening for any scraping noise. If it is rubbing it may be possible to re-centre it. It may be a feasible DIY job, depending on how confident you are.
I have heard that simply removing a driver and replacing it upside down can cure the problem as gravity is now acting on it the opposite way, though that seems a bit optimistic. Maybe worth a try though.

I have a pair of these if you need them. B160 SP1203 is the part number on the side. Pulled from a pair of C80s with rough cabinets and a missing B139.
