KEF R3 Newbie question

Just picked up a pair. The amp clipped (is that the right term?), or shut off when I wired it with a single wire using THE BOTTOM TWO TERMINALS. I twisted the single/bi knobs to the correct position.

Then when I bi-wired them they worked fine (having twisted the knob back the other way)

Anybody know if the two bottom posts are the ones to use when single wiring?

Any clues as to what the problem might be?

Thanks

The owner's manual recommends using the bottom terminals when single-wired, but it shouldn't really matter since the two sets of terminals are strapped together in single-wire mode.

The HINT has a 4-ohm power rating, and given the reputation of the Halo line, it should be plenty capable of driving the R3's.
