Kef reference model 101

Hello all,

I have an opportunity to pick up a pair of very nice kef ref. speakers for 200.

I am not dying for another pair of speakers, but I would like to spend some time listening to different styles of speakers.

If I end up disappointed, would these be easy to resell for 200?

thanks!

Probably yes. Their loose affinity with the BBC LS3/5a makes them sought after. Almost every tiny speaker model with a B110 and a T27 and a decent crossover are easy to sell. And these are pretty decent. And their small size makes them easier to ship than, say, an integrated amplifier from that vintage.

Expensive when new, at $200 I’d be listening to them right now. Just verify that the tweeters are correct and working.
Put them on good quality stands out in your room.
Happy listening!

Well? You posted on Tuesday, and now is Friday…did you get them? It’s a no brainer deal. Or have you ghosted after getting an answer?? There’s a pair on CL in my area right now:

I have owned two pair of the Kef 101. I would have been in my truck to get them right away for $200. You will never find a speaker that would sound better for $200. You will triple (at least) your money if you were not happy with them but honestly you will keep them. They are that good!

Yes.

I got my Kef 103/2s two days apart, same location in a thrift store for $15 the former and $25 for the latter. They were consecutive serial numbers. These actually satisfied the lust I have had for that type of speaker ever since I passed on a pair of 101s about 8 years ago for $350. When my sanity returned to me and I went back, they were gone.

Ive never had a better pair of speakers. The R101 are incredible. They are the type of speaker that trick your ear into thinking that someone is singing or playing live in your home. With a good hefty amplifier they are crazy good. They do need some power behind them but then you've got some amazing sound!

Add these with an Audioengine s6 subwoofer and you don't want to stop listening to records! ❤️ ❤️ I got mine from Ebay, and one of the speakers kept cutting out on me. I diagnosed it was a problem with a corroded crossover. Sprayed it carefully with DeOxit and Woolah, they were good to go. Lots of fine tuning with Sub, but sound freakin great.

That won't fix the problem for long. The caps for the protection circuit leak, and corrode through the tracks. Ask me how I know, I've probably restored at least five pairs of these crossovers, including two pairs just last month (Jan 2026).

Nope, you gotta rip out all of the protection circuit and bypass the relay.

My apologies. They are working for now. I've read about the protection relays with Kef reference 101s and many people have problems with corroded crossovers. Don't want to tell people something that has temporarily worked for me as a long term fix.
