Kenwood KA-4002a VS Pioneer Pioneer SA-1490 VS Realistic STA-85

Hi everyone! I'm in the process of setting up my first audio system, and I'm currently on the lookout for a good amplifier. I've narrowed down my options to three choices available in the second-hand market. Through my research on this forum and other websites, the Kenwood KA 4002a stands out as the most convincing option for me. However, I do have some doubts about its 18W per channel output as it might struggle to power high-quality sound towers. Nevertheless, I've come across numerous positive comments about its sound quality.

Regarding the Pioneer, I couldn't find as much information, but its 130W per channel output sounds promising. Yet, in my quest for information, I've learned that power doesn't necessarily equate to quality. The components of the circuit might hold more significance than the wattage per channel. As for the Realistic amplifier, I've stumbled upon good reviews, leading me to believe that this might be a middle-ground option among the three.

Given my novice status in this realm, I'm eager to hear from individuals with more expertise. I believe I can find the right guidance and insights here. Your opinions and advice would be greatly appreciated!

Do not buy that Pioneer.

Any and all hoopla about the brand does not apply to that unit. I suspect it was not available on it's own when new. Instead, it would have part of what some call a "rack system". Made to look impressive to a naïve consumer and at a relatively low price point.

Of the three, that Realistic gets my vote. Second would be the Kenwood but as you mention, not a lot of power. That might compromise it's ability to drive some speakers. Or not, depending on your expectations and listening habits.

I second that comment.
I have the Kenwood in my stash. Very well constructed, and ample power to drive high efficiency speakers.

Remember, most listening is under 5 watts.

Depends on the efficiency of the speaker.

It used to be amps were small and speakers were big. The last time I was in a brick & mortar audio shop, the amps were almost as big as the speakers and the amps were on the floor and speakers were on stands...
