Kenwood KA 7002

The KA-7002 was my first amp - I loaned it to my son for college - he said smoke and sparks shot out of it one day - so he trashed it!!! I will never let him live it down!! - So now, he goes out and buys one for himself and sends me a set of Bose 901's that need refoamed - I want my amp back!!
 
I know this is an old thread. But, can we reactivate it? I have a KA-7002 and the left channel just went out. It really is a sweet amp. Gotta get it fixed. And gotta get a matching KT-7001.

People who came from Trio-Kenwood founded ca.1973-74 Kensonic Laboratory Inc.
with the brand Accuphase.

Hi Chum...can you be a little more precise of which transistors was replace?
I happen to own a KA-7002 and I to have that issue...weak channel on the right ....
 
I know but my Kenwood is a few decades as well...Im sure there are someone who is having this issue or HAD this issue in the past.... Im hoping I will get some replies...

To let Chum know you want him to read your post use the @Chum and when he comes back to AK (been gone since Oct of 2017 so he might drop in. Or you could start a conversation with him.

I seriously doubt he will remember anything other than the unit was repaired because he had it done, didn't do it himself. I might recommend you start a thread of your own asking about the issue you have with your amp and see if anyone out there can offer some guidance. Good Luck, the amp is worth fixing. Nice units.

Start a new thread and we'll get you some help. I've downloaded the KA-7002 service manual and have some recommendations for you already... just waiting to see the new thread pop up.
 
So, where's this new thread? Just acquired a KA 7002. Left channel is out with speakers, but headphones have both L and R just fine. Cleaned with DeOxit, a double shot to the null button and tape selector switch. Anything else I can try before taking it to a pro? I did not find any internal fuses, anyone know if they're hiding somewhere?

I'd love to try the MC phono. And the 4 channel thing, does this KA have a built in decoder? Or maybe I'm misinterpreting the manual?
 
No decoder in the 7002. I just finished a major restoration of mine. Nice amp. A bird's nest inside, with a lot of point to point wiring and some very challenging boards to access. There aren't a lot of them around. I really like its looks, especially when stacked with the matching tuner. See my avatar.

Yes, that is a fine looking set of Kenwoods!

The good news on my end is both channel speakers are now working. I'm guessing it just took a couple days for the deoxit to soak in and work its magic on the Null button. I've notice on a couple of occasions that the Caig product can take a while to work.

First impression is pretty good, but my test speakers are the Minimus 7 so hoping for something great with some better speakers.

Have you tried the MC phono stage? When I picked up this 7002 I assumed the phono "low/high" was for MM and ceramic. I have not seen MC on an amp with "only" 50 wpc before. Very pleasant surprise! Looking forward trying my Denon 103. If the MC stage is really good, I'll be regretting splurging on a Cinemag Blue SUT a month before I got the Kenwood for essentially peanuts!
 
The low input can handle a VLOMC like the Ortofon MC20 with an output of 0.7mV, 70µV. The input is rated at 0.6mV needed for full output. Neat.

I have not connected my only MC cart to the KA-7002 yet. The TT I am using with it right now is a modified AR-XA and a Shure M91 with HE stylus. Sounds quite good to my ears. However, I did rebuild the head amp, preamp and tone boards (along with the rest of the unit)...this really dropped the noise levels down with all inputs, but especially the phono. The KA-7002 has around 20 2SC871 and 2SC458 transistors in it. While marketed as "low noise", they were actually not...and age seems to make them even worse. So, they're all gone now, replaced with modern substitutes.

I might not call the 7002 a great amp, but it's pretty darned good. Mine is in my home office, running with Snell JIIs. Very nice. Good luck with yours.

Replaced with KSC1845F? Or something else?
 
Hard to beat an m91, one of my favorites for all around use. Even with a $20 EVG stylus it sounds good. Hopefully I'll be able to tolerate any noise with an MC, we'll see. The real fun is in the trying!
