Just picked up a Kenwood KA305 and I have some concerns.

How hot should the bottom panel get underneath the transformer? The bottom panel is getting almost hot to the touch directly below the transformer, and the top panel is warm with a feeling that the top panel is vibrating ever-so-slightly. There is also a hum coming from the transformer although this isn't being amplified (there is only a barely audible 60Hz hum through the speakers which can only be heard with an ear right up to the speakers and it isn't affected by changing the volume level).

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. Is this behaviour fairly normal with the small Kenwoods?

The sound is pretty decent and there is no distortion or hiss.

Something is working the transformer hard. It shouldn't be that hot, IMO. If you can find a service manual, check the alignment and power supply voltages.

Further to this I checked it again after my initial post and it IS amplifying the hum. By about 10 o'clock on the volume control it can very clearly be heard through the speakers.

Don't know whether it is connected or not, but the unit has a strange smell to it as well - reminds me a bit of a farm-yard smell.

On listening, once orchestral passages or big rock tracks start to get really complicated and large-scale it almost sounds as if the amp isn't getting enough juice.
