Kenwood KD-2055

rang

New Member
Hello,

I just picked up a Kenwood KD-2055 TT this weekend but the tone arm will not move at all from the rest. Everything else seems to work but on the unit but this any idea's or suggestions that I my try to rectify this issue?
Thanks so much

Have you released the catch on top of the tone arm rest? It has to be flipped over out of the way before the arm will move.

My KD5100 has a seperate motor w/ belt that drives the tone arm? maybe a missing or slipping belt?. CC

could be but when I took the bottom off I could not see any broken peices or any thing. I could not see where a belt would go but something has to drive the arm I would think, belt gears something....

just wish that i could see a pic of the inside of a working one to see if something is missing or broken....

rang, the KD 2055 is not an automatic TT.

You have the move the lever on the right front forward to play, to start the platter spinning. Then lift the tonearm and place it over the record...if you have the cueing lever in the up position...move it so the tonearm drops gently on the playing surface.

The tonearm will return after it reaches the runout grooves at the end of the record.

Go to vinylengine.com and download the owner's manual and/or the service manual. HTH, Preston

thank you very much..... I did not know that this was not a automatic TT. I tested the TT out and it played like it should and everything worked but the tonearm did not return at the end of the record... not sure if the arm is to return or not... maybe this is what is broken on the TT. Heck I only paid $25 for the TT.

Your welcome, I've received a lot of help and info here, glad to be able to do the same!

When I got mine it would not return automatically AS IT SHOULD...I cleaned and "played around" with the controls/mechanisms in the bottom. Wish I could tell you what I did to fix it but I :dunno:.

Download the service manual...it shows places to lubricate on the return mechanism...FWIW I didn't have the service manual when I 'fixed' mine:scratch2:. Preston

When you download the SM from the VinylEngine go to page 4 and study it carefully while at the same time looking at the turntable. Your answer is likely to be found there.

Thanks John.... I have downloaded the SM and studied both of them with the TT apart and the only thing that I can see that does not make sense to me is the detecting operation arm and the detection arm are not working as they should but I can't see any missing parts or broken parts.

The detecting operation arm is very loose and when I move the piece it does nothing to the detection arm... I think this is where the issue is but I am not sure. Do you know if this detecting operation arm is supposed to be tight or loose? Right now it is very loose and does nothing

thanks

I'll start by saying that I've never worked on a Kenwood or even seen the inside of one. In looking at the SM, however, it looks like the detecting operation arm (A) is tripped by the "return arm" which is not identified in the diagram but I believe it's the arm extending out from the tonearm pivot and terminating in a sort of square hook that engages (A) as a consequence of tonearm traveling into the runout grooves (called here the "guide groove"). I don't actually think the detection arm does anything unless you manually "cut" playback by operating the "Cut Button".

There may be an adjustment on the return arm that alters the point on the record at which the arm is raised. You can check this by starting the turntable and, with the arm in the raised position, move it in toward the center. Once you're in the "dead wax" move it very gradually in toward the spindle and see if the mechanism activates. You might even have to move the arm in so far that the stylus is over the label.

If nothing happens try opening the turntable up again and move the arm inward while watching the mechanism from below. See what happens.

Good luck. Maybe someone with Kenwood experience will pipe up.

rang, take the platter off, there should be a small pin in a white plastic 'nut' on the backside of the platter. This trips the long lever seen in the second pic that returns the TA.

Move the play lever to play and trip the lever by hand(pull it towards the front of the TT) and insure that the mechanism works. HTH, Preston

Aha! Pioneer DD turntables use a similar system but the mechanism is internal and the pin is attached to the spindle.

There's an adjustment arm. It wasn't clear from the SM what it adjusted but it appears from your photo that it lengthens the arm, sort of a rack and pinion deal. A longer arm would engage the pin earlier, a shorter arm later, short enough and the pin would miss it altogether. Am I seeing this correctly?

Hi John, I can't see where there is any adjustment on the automatic mechanism shown on page four of the SM.

The part that's called detection adj. knob on mine is stationary and doesn't move:dunno:. Wish I knew more. Preston

yes this is all there.... and I when I do this by hand the TA picks up like it should.

pjsjr,

if you look at the second picture you posted you can see the metal detecting operation arm. is that tight or loose? On the TT it is very loose and when the TA hits this it does nothing at all.

this is what it looks like, if you look at the first and second pictures you can see where the TA arm hits the detecting operation arm. Is this lose or tight?

rang, after looking at your photos closer I see where the problem is...you are missing a part or parts that work in conjunction with the dectecting operation arm.

I've taken a quick pic for now and if we need more I'll do that tomorrow in the daylight.

See that curved, kinda like a backward question mark shaped white plastic piece to the left of the detecting operation arm? That is what your missing. HTH, Preston
