I have a Kenwood KR-5200 in very nice condition and works well except the left channel is ~10% softer than the right. I have cleaned all the switches and pots but it still remains. It used to drop completely out but adjusting the volume or pushing some buttons slightly would bring it back. I had a shop look at it and they said it needs a full recap and that it wouldn’t be worth the money they quoted, over $400.

Any thoughts on where I should start or do with this unit?

Keep cleaning. A lot of times multiple cleanings are required due to environmental issues (old tobacco smoke, salty air near coast, living in L.A. or Pittsburgh area for example). You may need to physically dis-assemble, and mechanically clean the contacts in the switches and pots (an ultrasonic bath will do also). DO ALL OF THEM!!! Then protect with DeOxit Faderlube or SHIELD as needed. Assemble and test. If the unit still drops out, then troubleshoot it.
