Kenwood KR-7600 - In Series or Parallel?

Hi,

I am considering picking up a KR-7600 on the local market. I think these are among the sexiest receivers ever made.

I have a KR-4600, and the speaker channels are in series. It's a little obnoxious, because you can't wire a powered subwoofer to the B channel - you have to cram the second set of wires into channel A, and this means you can't toggle off the sub without killing your main speakers as well.

There is also no pre-out on either the 4600 or 7600, so I can't connect a sub that way.

I was wondering if anyone knew whether the KR-7600 speaker channels are wired in series or in parallel.

The speaker terminals of the KR-7600 are wired in series.

The front panel and tuner display of the 7600 really is attractive. The fake plastic heat sinks on the side panels are unfortunate.

Image from the Manual. It certainly implies that A+B are series connected.

Maybe you could take a look at the schematic as well, just to be double-sure!

You can connect a patch cord from the headphone output to the subwoofer.
As long as plugging into the headphone jack doesn't deactivate speakers. I have an integrated amp that does this, rather annoying.
 
No, it doesn't deactivate speakers. It helps to consult the schematic before giving advices...

One more detail. If a patch cord is connected from the headphone output of this receiver, the other end must be connected to the "speaker level" inputs of the subwoofer, not the line level inputs of the subwoofer.

And headphone output ain't exactly speaker-level output either, it's high-impedance, low power. Look at any schematic of an applicable circuit. To verify, try to power a pair of speakers via headphones jack. You'll get it. If headphones jack was truly speaker-level out, as in full- bore low impedance out, there'd be many cases of smoked headphones & deafened users.

Read the first post. The OP talked about connecting a powered subwoofer to the Kenwood receiver. In any powered subwoofer that I have seen (quite a lot!), the input impedance is very high, of the order of 50k Ohms or larger, be it on the line level inputs or the speaker level inputs. In fact, it is larger on the speaker level inputs because there is an attenuator to bring the level on par with the line level inputs before feeding this signal to the subwoofer amplifier. Inside the KR-7600 there is a 470 Ohms resistor (one per channel) between the output from the protection relay and the headphone jack. That would give only about 1% voltage loss if the subwoofer is connected to the headphone output. If the signal from the headphone output is connected to the line level input of the subwoofer, the subwoofer would be overloaded.
 
A big thank you to all those who chimed in! It sounds like the Kenny is definitely wired in Series. Not the end of the world, but I don't think I will be picking up this model as my daily driver.

In this case, I have a line-level converter from Russounds. I use it to connect speaker-level output to a sub that does not have speaker-level inputs. Would the same device work for the headphone jack scenario?
