Hello guys. I have an opportunity to pick up the above mentioned receiver in a few hours and wanted to know if it's worth getting. Couldn't find much online and can't seem to do a check on here for info(I am on my phone at work)..lol. Looking for some quick info since I was planning on picking it up on my way home in a few hours. The seller wanted $70 and says it's in great shape. Thanks for help.

Listen to it for yourself before you buy it. Make sure it works correctly besides the usual (on most untouched, uncleaned vintage) static and cleaning of the pots & switches. Also, depending on what type or kind of speakers you want to use, it might sound awsome on the sellers speakers, but sound like crap on the one's you want to use, or vise versa.

Thanks century tek...I plan on listening to it. The seller says they don't have any speakers to check it so a coworker is gonna loan me 2 small spots to do it. Its between work and my home so its much easier to go there first since it will be about 10pm when I get there. They also have a Marantz pm-432A amp or probably receiver for sale as well so gonna check that out too. Don't know anything about that either. Thanks again. Any info is appreciated guys.

Well guys, I got off work last night and headed to check out that Kenwood. I finally got to the house at about 11pm but the couple didn't mind, they were wide awake...lol. This thing was HUGE and heavy, I didn't expect that. Anyway I listened to the receiver in FM mode and it sounded ok, just some static etc. You could tell it was gonna need a thorough cleaning.It was in great shape though, just a light 1/2" scratch on the lower right of the face-plate. I paid the $70 and headed home. Did a quick check with some small KLH speakers I have and it sounds good. May need a recap tho (I haven't done anything like that yet) but will see. Here are a few pix. What do you guys think...was it a good buy? Also..does anyone have a service manual or anything for this? Searched on hifi engine but nothing. Any help or suggestions about this receiver will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I would have gotten it for $70. Do some searches, there should be some more info on it.

Clean it first before you think of recapping. Maybe check if there is a service manual where you can adjust bias or DC. What makes you think it needs a recap? I don't think it's that old.

Check stereomanuals.com or eBay for service manuals.

If I recall the reason I was interested in getting one, is it's supposed to have a very good tuner. And 80 watts is a decent wattage.

Terra1, I don't know why I said that..lol. I guess I figured since it is 30 years old it needed a recap. So far it doesn't sound bad at all. I can tell it needs a thorough cleaning tho. I can hear static when turning up volume etc. I will have to check out the different stickies here on how to do it properly. I will post more pix when I crack it open etc. Thanks again guys...gonna have to track down the manual.

I have the little brother to that I think, KR 720. Excellent tuner, good power, a bit weak on the low end though. Really need an equalizer to get the sound. Dust is a problem in the tuning cap, screws up the digital part of the deal. (I'm sure no expert there)

Good buy on that receiver for sure.

(Edit: Looks like that receiver is all digital in the tuning, sorry, disregard the tuning cap deal)

Haha, yeah, I have the KR-710 from the bottom of that lineup. It sounds pretty decent. Your KR-770 is actually the first I've seen.

Hello again guys..I didn't want to start a new thread, just going to continue with this until my receiver is cleaned up etc. I have a question, how do I get dust from behind the tuner face area? tried to blow some air through the sides but still can't get it all out. Also, is it ok to use CRC QD electronic cleaner to "wash" all inside the receiver? I have been using it to clean all the pots, contacts etc. and it seems to work well but I am also going to get some De-oxit lube or the Rat Shack lube spray to lubricate everything also. Thanks again for all your responses. As you can tell, I have never really done this before. Thanks.

I still have a KR-770. Bought it new for $200, sort of. I was a fire sale where an audio store had a fire. This receiver was knocked over and had a scratch on one side, so they sold it as a damaged unit. I took it home and it worked great. A friend of mine and I took the top and sides off and made a new case for it with Brazilian Mahogany.

I always loved this receiver. Use to hook up an AM antenna and listened to NY radio in DC. That was pretty awesome. I liked the two tape deck input feature as I dubbed a lot of tapes. Still sounds and works great after 35 years.

I have a KR-750. The general design is similar, but mine has a very different tuning system from the look of it.

I just use canned air or maybe a soft artist's paint brush to get dust out of nooks and crannies. I use successive cleanings of pots and switches. CRC is great for flushing, but not as good at eating corrosion as DeOxit5. Cleaning pots and switches sometimes cures several issues, not just noisy controls.

I'd probably be using my KR-750 now, except that I like my KR-5150 a bit better.
