Kenwood KR-9600 receiver

I will be picking this monster up tonight. Seller states that it has intermittent noise (crackling) on one channel when he adjusts volume, but when he tested it again while we spoke, the issue didnt happen. I am thinking a good bath of deoxit. The only question would be if the problem is only one channel, could there be more serious concerns? The price is right tho...50.00 obo

Being as KR-9600's usually go for around $300 and up, I'd say you did pretty damn good. Even if it needs repair, you're still at least $250 ahead of the game. Great score! :thmbsp:

Hey, good eye, & good score. :thmbsp: I contacted the seller about the Altec receiver, & might be getting it tomorrow. It depends if he's driving in this direction or not, he's not sure yet. That 711A is supposed to be the 1st all transistor/solid state receiver ever built, so has to be pretty collectible. I'm not really sure yet if that's a good price or not, but it looks pretty good, & he says it works. :scratch2:

I am going out tonight around 8 or so. He wont be home until then. If there is anything you want me to check on as far as the Altec is concerned, let me know. He did say that someone was coming out tonight to buy the Altec when I spoke with him at 4:45 today. he mentioned that this person was interested in the Kenny, but might not have the cash. If this is you, let me know, and I will step aside.

I think your going to love the big KR, it's a real brute and I suspect a good cleaning will solve all the problems. It has a great five gang tuner and the signal meter doubles as a modulation meter so you can see how much compression a given station uses.

Enjoy it

No, grab the Kenny, by all means. When I emailed him, I said I'd LIKE to grab both, but couldn't afford both, so he might have misunderstood, or have others interested. That's pretty cool of ya to offer though. :smoke:

Nice score Larry! That looks like a monster receiver - 160 WPC for $50? :yikes:Wow.

I'm always impressed by Kenwood tuners - this one's must be amazing. Well worth the evening drive south to Olympia. :thmbsp:

Don't hurt your back lifting that beast! Let us know how it cleans up. :music:

That Altec sounds pretty cool to check out, especially for $20 - hope it works out for you to grab that unit, Spaceman. :thmbsp: :music:

Thanks...I am pretty sure he was speaking of you then. If you find out any info on the Altec, let me know if possible before 7:30 before I head south. If you think this is something you want, I would be happy to pick it up for you. Maybe PM me and give me a contact number and I can call you from there when I am inspecting the goods..if you should decide that you want the Altec.

Heh, the biggest issue is, he lives way down in Olympia, & the other issue is, just how good IS the Altec? :scratch2: There's definitely not much info anywhere on it, & I already did a search & started a thread in vintage ss about it, so I'm still undecided. BTW, if it was $20, I'm sure I'd take a chance, but ya tend to think a little harder for $100. ;)

I cant find much either, but there are some threads online where it is mentioned in passing. Yeah, I think for 20.00 it would be worth the risk, but he has it at 100.00. I can let you know how it sounds when I get down there, plus the cosmetic shape as well. The seller did mention to me that he might be in the Kent area Sunday?? so maybe hook up there if possible if you decide on getting it. I would consider waiting until tomorrow myself, but you know how CL works sometimes. Grab the kenny now or take the chance it may be gone by then..

kenwood 9600 toggle switches

That Kenny is a great grab. What Altec unit?

The Altec is a 711A solid state. From what I understand it was one of the 1st solid state units available??? Just what I was told anyways.

Now on to the Kenwood 9600. Picked it up last night. The issues appeared when the seller hooked up his I-Pod as a source. The right channel works fine, but the left channel has much static. Even fiddling with the volume and balance control knobs wouldnt temp fix the problem. I pulled the top cover and it is caked in dust, dirt, just plain filthy. What I need to know is how to pull the toggle switches off the front. I want to remove the faceplate, and even pulling on the toggle switch, it wont come off. Are these a complete piece which needs to be accessed from the bottom or??? I am hoping that it just needs a good couple dosings of Deoxit. Or Bad solder joints?? Thanks for any help

The toggle switch knobs pull off straight. It may take a liitle tug to get them off, as they have been on there for a while. The toggle switch stalks stay in place. This may end up as a "damned if you do, and damned if you don't" situation. :sigh:

Good luck with that Kenny. It's a nice peice especially at the price you paid. If you can get it to work properly you will like it.

Best,

Paul :thmbsp:

Thanks Beemer, Thats what I thought as well, but because these are basically stuck, thought they might come off from the inside of unit..the whole piece, and not the outer switch. Thanks again

When I got my KR-9600 the faceplate was dirty, so I've been through this, as I feel the best way to clean it is to remove it. Believe me, when I "tugged" on those stalk covers all I could think about was something completely unavailable breaking :yikes: fortunately, all ended well.

I'm hoping all ends well for you too!

Thanks Paul Was able to get the toggle switches off. Took a little tugging but all came off without incident. In the process of doing some general cleaning I noticed that the jumpers on the back were a very short pair of rca plugs with a 2 inch wire connecting the 2 rca's. One of the jumpers was showing some bare wire from being in a crimped position from time. I havent seen the back of the kenwood 9600 before and was wondering if these are a stock pre-main jumper. Normally you see 'u' shaped jumpers. I pulled these off for now, and am using some new rca cables. I havent plugged in the receiver yet since I just got done deoxing the unit. Will test it out when I get home this afternoon.

**Just saw the back of a 9600 and see that these are not correct jumpers**

Smart to try a new patch cord in place of what's on the jumpers now. I'm oping when you light this off both channels play like new....I'll be watching to hear how you do!

Hi Larry - If all goes well when you test this afternoon, turn it up LOUD - I should be able to hear from my office. :music: :D

Just got around to putting the kenny back together. Double checked connections, hooked up the Forte's, and hit the power button with FM as the source. Now I see what alot of you guys are saying about the tuner in this receiver. Just 3 clicks on the volume control and the Fortes are rockin'. Still will need a couple more doses of deoxit tho, the tone defeat switch still is dirty and the volume/balance controls still drop out, but not as before. This unit was plain filthy inside and will need somemore cleaning, but right now, very impressed with this Kenwood.

How's the phono section? I'm guessing that you have a few LPs lying around to test with? :lmao:
