Kenwood kr-9600

a local store has a Kenwood kr-9600 receiver for 400.00. it looks to be in very good shape. i would have to to do a massive trade in of other vintage gear to be able to pull this off at this time. i was going to swap it for a Kenwood ka 8100 amp/ kt 7500 tuner + a small stack of others. is this shiny beast a good investment?

Well,a KA-8100 integrated + KT-7500 tuner for a TOTL monster KR-9600 receiver is a great deal to me. But it all depends on what the other small stack of components are?... just because they're small,doesn't mean they're not valuable.
 
yeah i hear you. tis a slippery slope. the store gives about 60% trade credit (e-bay). so im sitting around looking at what i paid for stuff for vs.potential ebay prices vs CL. its a tangled web but id still be ahead on initial investment. i might go 3 technics turntables and a set of klipsch speakers. its a win/win? maybe im just too lazy to sell all that individually and want the shiny new toy. actually ive waffled too long and the shop has closed for the day. i will have a couple of days to mull this one over.
 
If you really want and you think you'er not losing anything money wise, why not? Not to deter you, however, the KR-9600 does have flaws when it comes down to repairs (IIRC unobtainable outputs), so you may need to take that into consideration.

Never had a bad/irrepairable Kenwood KR-9600 (nor have I ever seen one).
But if the deal also incudes 3 Technics TT's and a pair of Klipsch speakers then personally I'd pass. Shops like that are solely there to make profit... they look it all up carefully with nothing but $$$ in-mind.

of course it depends on the TTs and the Klipsch speakers
KG 2 are a lot different than Heresys .. etc. etc.
 
thanks for the sage advice. i was unaware of the potential fatal flaw of the kr-9600. i find i dont really need it but just desire it as a trophy. as for those concerned about the TTs and speakers i probably only have 30 apiece in the TTs and the klipsch would be the synergy b-20 that i picked up for 10. im in danger of becoming a hoarder (so say my friends) because i will rescue vintage audio from the thrifts and fleas just because it amuses me to do so.

Completely rebuildable, and worth doing,,,,,,,

Don't all successful shops do this?

Sounds like a solid business plan to me, but I agree on the KR 9600, it's a definite keeper.
 
I'm all for trading gear that you don't want into gear that you do want.
Sounds like nothing really lost in the speakers and TTs - and they are more than likely just sitting on a shelf anyway - so why not?
It also makes room for more finds :D
 
My KR9600 was my first vintage receiver I bought.
Lots of gear has come and gone, but the big Kenwood soldiers on.
In my book it's like an SX-1250 for half the price.
If you are technically gifted a upgraded op amp in the tuner makes an excellent improvement.
 
I've owned one and really enjoyed it. I found mine oddly enough tucked away in the back of a salvage yard in a metal shop. Rescued it and used it for some time, it was is amazing shape.

Give it a go, I will always use other pieces to trade up in my eyes

i am at the poinnt where i have too much equipment as well and would be looking to do a 3 for 1. three 30 dollar turntables and a 10 dollar pair of speakers is a good bargain for a 9600
