Kenwood KT-6500 repair question

Hi,

I have a Kenwood KT-6500 tuner that is in good shape except for one issue. If you have it in "stereo" mode and tune in a station, it doesn't indicate "stereo" via the red light. However, if you click the knob to "mono" and then back to "stereo", it then does show the tuner receiving in stereo (red light is "on").

Not a big deal but was curious what may be wrong. I'd like to get my hands dirty in fixing it.

Maybe uses a transistor to drive the lamp and it's getting lazy? Depends on how KW did it... Maybe someone with a bit more tuner experiance will chime in...
 
I have worked on a few of these. Many times when the 19khz oscillator has drifted you will experience the symptom that you have. Looking at the right side of the board with the item facing you there is a trim potentiometer labelled VR3 and alongside is printed VCO. With a fine magic marker mark the current position of this trimpot's setting, if this is unsuccessful you will return the adjustment to this point. With your tuner properly tuned to a strong station broadcasting in stereo, and using a non-metallic tool, slowly adjust this trimpot while observing the stereo indicator. You may find that the stereo kicks in, if so mark this point with your magic marker. Now keep turning in the same direction until the stereo drops out once again and mark this point. What we want to find are the two endpoints of this adjustment where the stereo turns on and off. Now turn the adjustment to the midpoint of this turn on range. This is a method to adjust the 19khz oscillator without the need of a frequency counter and calibrated FM alignment generator. If this does not remedy the problem it needs to see a professional.
 
Sorry for digging this old thread up, but I just fixed my KT-6500 with the same problem using this thread. I have been putting up with it since I got it about 5 months ago. A simple nudge on VR3 and all is well. Thanks!!:thmbsp:
