I've got a pretty strong background in electronics, but working the crossovers is new for me. I've been enjoying digging in and doing research.
I just picked up a pair of Kenwood ls-408b's for dirt cheap on marketplace. They sound okay, but unfortunately do not have the original woofers (replaced with a (cheap?) radio shack 12" woofer).
I cracked them open to take a look at the crossover, and I'm pretty puzzled by what I found.
Both the mid and tweeter have a single resistor in series. 3.3uf for the tweeter, and 8uf for the mid.
Does anyone know if those are the original capacitance value, or if they have been replaced? The advertised crossover point is 2000 and 5000Hz
Odder still, the l pads appear to be in series with the woofers, rather than parallel. This seems odd as it would cause them to affect the crossover frequency, rather than just the attenuation.
My current plan is to pull the mids and tweeters, and measure them on the bench to build impedance charts for them (I have the equipment to do this, but it will be fairly labor intensive). I'll then combine that with an impedance chart from a new, higher quality woofer to design a new crossover in Xsim. Any thoughts on if this is worth doing, or if I'm better off just recapping and calling it a day?
