Clean all the controls and clean or replace the speaker relay if it has one. My 4007 has a relay so maybe yours does also. If you can solder you might want to replace all the electrolytic caps.
 
after a skim of this thread it seems replacing caps may not be a good thing...

I guess some contact cleaner and re soldering of key joints would be the safer approach while retaining the original sound?
 
yes, it sounds great!

As for losing some brightness, playing with some treble fixed that!

The midrange is incredible compared to my Sony STR-D965, the Sony is far too harsh on the highs and completely misses the midrange!

I cant believe its been sitting in front of me as a ornament for years!
 
The Kenwoods are well balanced amps. Congrats on getting it fixed. If it starts acting up again, give it another cleaning treatment.
