Kenwood stereo systems: K*-209 or K*-994?

I've grown to like Kenwood stereo systems, and I've started to build on a KC-209 that should be arriving from eBay soon. I was planning on getting a KM-209, CD player, etc., following that line later on. The thing is that a full set of KA-994/KM-894 with everything but a record player is available locally for not a whole lot of money. How can I tell which one is the better set? Do you have any recommendations?

Set them up side by side and play the same CD on both, or use same CD player to both systems. Maybe have a friend switch CD player back and forth.

I won't be able to compare one against the other, unfortunately. I need to purchase the KM-209 if I want to go that route. And I'm sure the guy selling the KA-994/KM-894 is not going to let me compare it in his house ;-) I was hoping somebody familiar with both could tell me if there is a big difference between the two systems. I only know one system is newer, but I've also heard bad things about the 90s. Still have so much to learn.

I doubt there will be much difference between the models. I think someone did a update or resto of the 994 or similar on the Kenwood sub forum. You might want to search there.

I like my kc209/km209 combo. A lot of cheap power and convenience of a remote.

I don’t own a KM-209, I only have the KC-209 coming soon
You don't need a km-209 unless you want a matched set.

Pretty much any power amp should work. I've used a m1, m2, m2a, hafler 200, and others.
