Keyless Ignition: Can't Stand It.

Who else is with me? Sure, it's a neat feature, but I don't like it. To me it's simply unnecessary and I always forget to take the keys with me when I exit the vehicle :D Just so used to having a keyring with me when I park the car. Also, you need to worry about the remote-thing's battery power. If that breaks, how the hell are you gonna start the car?!

My mother bought a new Nissan Altima and it's got keyless ignition. I keep telling her how I dislike the feature, and she thinks I'm crazy...

Well, I'm with your mom - my wife's Altima Coupe has it, and I like it so much that it's making me think about trading in my Mazda on a Nissan.

Keyless ignition is real common in two of the neighboring towns (Stockton and Modesto).

It's called a screwdriver. Been around for years.

I hate that too! You see these duchebags running around with their fancy little remote control keychains starting their crapuras [acuras] as they're walking up to it, in their armani suits and fake glasses. Or when they lock their doors as they're walking away from it, complete with the car alarm chirp sound. And power windows! MAN HOW I HATE THOSE! What if you wanna open or close the window when the car is turned off, or if the alternator is gone?
power seats, power locks, remote control start, etc. means more problems. Every single car we had when I was a kid that had power windows and/or locks, the windows and locks never worked properly. You know when you try to close the window and it's moving aggrovatingly slow, or the locks won't unlock all the way? POS!!!

But anyway, you should see my friend and his crapura with his remote control thingy. He also just put these gay rims on his car. RICER!! Although he won't admit it. The sad thing is that he used to be a die hard Chevy guy. Well I'm a Ford guy, but if you ask me, Chevys can kick any import's ass. i would rather drive a chevy, or even a dodge than any of those asian cars.
But I sure laughed at my friend when he has to go the acura dealership to buy parts. $25.00 for an oil filter!!! And he got rid of his Pontiac because the crapura got slightly better fuel economy.
And my LTD may get horrific fuel economy, but the parts are dirt cheap and the car is very reliable. it's also extremely cheap to register; $27.00 a month.
I'd like to see these rice cookers last 35 years.

I still remember those GM cars from the early '50s. They were keyless. Nothing really new in the auto world, just new ways of doing the same old, same old.

Been eight years and all I have ever had to do was stick a new coin cell in the remote, however it does not start the car, that you do with the key.

My father-in-law's new Mercedes has a wallet card that has a transponder in it... When you walk close to the car, it unlocks, and there's a pushbutton starter that's live when the driver (wallet card) is in the car. I don't like it too much. Lots of times, we swap vehicles someplace (maybe a friend needs my truck, or something, and we just get out and drive away in each others'). I'd surely forget to hand off the wallet card!

I just don't have the desire to own a car that has even more ways that if something breaks or malfunctions it is rendered useless. And yeah, I know that's what the warranty is for, but I have an even bigger problem with buying depreciating goods. Not having a car note (since 1995) along with the extra expenses associated with insuring and registering a newer car frees up a lot of my money for savings and other things. And you really don't have to worry about theft or being carjacked in a 10+ year old car (a very real problem 7 miles up the road in New Orleans.)

I do not follow new car toy all that much but are you saying that if your father were to drive in the Mercedes to the top of Mt. Washington or Pike's Peak and someone lifts his wallet he has a long walk. And, a hide-a-key (or hide a card) is not an option b/c it could be close enough to some sensor that the car could be started by pressing a button and not secured. What dumb *ss came up with that one? Come to think of it, wonder how the new Volvos work. I noticed when I rented the keys seemed not any more than a plastic slug on the end of the remote control.

And I thought the laser cut key for my Volvo was an expensive pain in the arse when I had to go to Volvo for a spare.

It must be an "elderly woman" marketing feature! My mother just bought a lexus with the same - she thinks it's magic. I think its a stupid gimmick; all I can see are problems and safety issues.

Way back in about 1970 she had a Citroen ID19 with pushbutton start - it had a key, that needed to be in the dashboard, but you didn't turn the key to start the engine. If you pushed the button with no key, the starter motor would crank the engine, but no ignition.
It could have been pretty dangerous: even with no key, if the car was 'in gear', and you pushed the start button, it would lurch forward under power of the starter.

My 1990 Ford is the only car I've yet encountered with electric windows that need no key or ignition to work. I really like that design.

Me ex-wife locked herself IN her Cadillac once. The doors wouldn't open or unlock from the inside so she called me and I drove to the gas station where she was at, it was right up the street. So I told her to roll down her window, got her keys, and unlocked it from the outside. Hey, she was a blonde.

No, you are the blond. You should have left her in there and once a week brought her some food. Then there'd ben no WAF issues loading the house up with good audio gear :).

You're in Canada and don't appreciate a remote start?

Are you a masochist in the wintertime? :D

You'd think so eh? Because here in Canada, it's never above -200c, even in the summer. Well one time a few years ago, it got so warm out, that our liquor melted, eh?! I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt that day. Well I had to go right across the border to the USA to buy them, because it never gets hot enough in Canada to need clothes like that eh?

lol sorry I couldn't resist, that comment actually reminded me of this conversation i was having with a friend of mine from upstate NY, about my travel trailer, and he said he's surprised it doesn't have a heater in it, considering it's in Canada lol

Also, my car has a carbureted engine, so i don't think a remote starter would work with it anyway lol

In the sixties Cadillacs had an "emergency" position on the power window lock switch, which allowed you to raise or lower the glasses without the key.
