OK, I just got some KG 4.2 speakers. And I'm both in love and disappointed. Hoping you all can help me...
The context:
Picked up some KG 4.2s from an original owner for $150 (yay!) who had them professionally repaired at a local shop about 15 year ago (that's approximate since he didn't seem to have the greatest recollection of the time line). have them set up to HQ streaming and vinyl (ATVM95ML on a SL-Q2 table) on a HK 550Vxi or MCS 3222 receiver (have B&K Separates, too, but prefer the integrated receivers' phono stage + intangibles.)
My previous speakers were/are Polk Monitor 65t tower speakers. When I did an A/B test of the Polks vs the KG's, I was bummed to find that I liked the Polk more. (clarity inn the mids and highs is a big deal to me) The KG's bass was thumping and the highs were great, but the middle frequencies sounded muddy compared to the Polk's (a three-way speaker).
SO I raised the KG's onto some cinder blocks and angled them a bit and now they sound much better, though midrange is a little weaker than the Polk's, but the bass is too weak! So they're closer to the Polk's and I prefer them because, frankly, I think I WANT to prefer them. But I think logic will kick ion soon and I'll go back to the Polks. Unless I still haven't gotten the KG's up to their potential...
OK, so, my question? Three-parter:
1. What's the ideal way to raise these speakers up and tilt them a little without losing bass? A hollow wooden box?
2. Would the Crites tweeter upgrades make a difference with the middle tones? Everything I read suggests they wouldn't- that they would just mellow out the highs. Anybody have any experience with that?
3. Is there a way for me to check the capacitors to see if they need to be replaced? The previous owner was confident that the speakers were fully repaired, but didn't know if the capacitors had been updated.
THANK YOU for your help as I decide whether to upgrade these with better stands and tweeters or save my money and time for some three-way Klipsch speakers.
