KG-4's vs. KLF-10's

I've been looking around for a set of KG-4's to pop up on CL but nothing has been appearing lately (actually a set of them came & went before I really knew much about them). A set of KLF-10's did pop up though - a bit more expensive than the usual going rate of the 4's. I was wondering how the 2 active 8's & passive 12 of the KG-4 stood up against the 2 active 10's & ported design of the KLF-10. There's also a set of Fortes w/in driving distance but they are a lot more expensive. Any thoughts & opinions will be welcome. Thanks.

I can't speak for the KG-4's but I really liked the KLF-10's. Kind of a sleeper being over shadowed by it's bigger brothers the 20 and 30. However, if you could swing the extra dough, I would go for the Forte's!

Fortes are awesome, dont know much about the Klf's, but I have some KG4's and they are very impressive for the money, you will not be disappointed.

Thanks for the replies so far. The KLF-10's are $300 the Fortes are $525 - neither one real "ba-gins" as far as that goes. CL or GW around here dosesn't really come up with any of the deals I read about other members getting. I do have a pair of KG-2's. They are somewhat bass-shy. The butyl surrounds were unconnected to the cones when I got them. Actually they had more bass working as a ported cabinet as it were w/o them connected than as a reflex cabinet. I don't know if the previous owners may have bought some generic surrounds and passives require a more flexible type of surround or not. Anyway, thanks for the replies - it gives me more to think about.

Bill's on the money...

$300.00 for a KLF10 is a good price I imagine you would be well pleased with them. A set of Quartets can make plenty of bass very close to that of a Forte if you can find a pair for a good price they use the same horns as a Forte ll. The forte l or ll is a better speaker and $400.00 -$500.00 is a good price these days depending on your local. Take a look on ebay if you want to see how high these speakers are going for. Perhaps you could ask to see if there is anyone close with a pair you could listen to. Good luck and best regards Moray James.

KLF-10's are a very nice sounding 2-way bone stock, and I can say for a fact that they can be taken to a completely higher plane by simply swapping in Crite's tweeters and crossover networks. $300 for them is a good deal. The only speaker that was able to nudge my KLF-10's out of my main system was my pair of KLF-20's. Even so I refuse to sell my 10's because I don't think I can ever buy that much speaker again for what I've got invested in them. I should also note that IME, it takes a nice tube amp to really make them come alive, the SS McIntosh, NAD, and Crown amps I've tried just don't make them sing like tubes do.

KG4s are really nice, I was torn between buying them or heresy 2s, went with the heresies, also have the KLF 10s, they absolutly rock, with all the bass you'll ever want.

Thanks for all the replies thus far. The Fortes are still available. Haven't heard back from the person with the KLF-10's. Would the KLF's w/ the Crite's driver & crossover modification sound about equivalent to the stock Forte? That might work out to be about the same price overall. Then too, are those same modifications available for the Fortes? Had also seen a pair of Infinity RS-6000's for $300 on CL but they seem to have disappeared. How would something like them compare to the Klipsches? The RS's have the Emit tweeter. Thanks again.

Crites makes those upgrades for the Forte'...the Forte' are Klipsch "extended" Heritage sound...the KLFs are newer and won't sound the same...should still have some Klipsch Family sound but different and they are 2 way where the Forte' are 3 way...as much as I would like Forte', it would be hard to pass up KLF-10s WITH the mods already done for "only" $300...

Hi Silversport - Actually the mods aren't done to the KLF's. I was just factoring in how much the stock ones at $300 and the cost of the mods would compare to the stock Fortes, both in sound quality & price. Oh yeah - if the KLF's were modded & selling for 300 I'd be on them like flies on excrement!!!

For an update - a pair of the KG4's came up on CL for a really good price ($175) this past weekend so I ended up going for them. Never could get a response from the KLF10 person & the Fortes should still be around. The 4's are in very good shape & are stock. I'll enjoy them like this for awhile before thinking about modding them. I saw in another thread where a few pairs of KG4's have come into people's homes over the last few days. Maybe in the Chinese calender March is The Month Of The Kg4's??

Ben

Hope you enjoy those.

Mine with the walnut finish were quite dull and faded looking. I ended up with a Minwax Antique Oil Restoration product and applied that yesterday.

Wow, what a transformation ! They're gorgeous now. The oil product wasn't the easiest to use (operator error I'm sure) but it has done a great job.

Yes, I like the fact that they are veneered. I have some similar oil to rub into mine also. Mine look a little dry. I bet they will shine up real nice though.
