KHorn guts into smaller footprint cabinets.

I have obtained the guts for a Speakerlab clone of the Klipsch Corner horn. I'm thinking of building cabinets similar to Altec Model 19. Something with a much smaller footprint. what is the feasibility of such a project? I am aware the crossovers will need to be replaced along the lines of Crites or ALK Engineering. Has anyone done this? Any input would be appreciated!

Woofer - 15in. similar to the k-33
Squawker - HD 350B Same as PD5HV
Tweeter - HT 350 same as T-35
L Pads for Mid and Tweet control
Crossover - XK 4Ohm. From what I have read, the crossovers need to go in the trash.

To me, what makes a Klipschorn a Klipschorn is the folded horn design of the bass.
If you eliminate that, you would be affecting the output and may end with very different tonal balance than what was designed.
I think so too but wouldn't a crossover adjust for that?

Sure.

Do you have all the measurement tools required to determine what the differences are, and the skills to implement the crossover to correct for them?

I was thinking something like this from ALK. The original "ALK Universal" replacement crossover network for the Klipschorn, La Scala and Belle Klipsch as been reimplemented to create an affordable option for nearly any Klipsch based 3-way loudspeaker. Since they are lumping Lascala, Cornwall and Belle Klipsch together I was thinking it would be more suitable to this project. I could be wrong however. Hence my question.

Quote from their ad.
  • A true 3-way network including a full crossover from squawker to tweeter at 4000, 5000 or 6000 Hz (bandpass) allowing the use of any quality squawker driver or the Klipsch K55.
  • The low frequency crossover is 1st order at roughly 400 or 600 Hz. The actual crossover frequency is acoustic and determined by the woofer and squawker driver and horn making it truly "Universal". It is compatible with the stock Cornwall, Heresy or virtually any Cornscala configuration.

Find some K-600's and build a pair of Cornwall clones which have a footprint of about 15.5" x 25.5". Or, use what you have and build some La Scala clones which have a footprint of 2' x 2' so they do take up some space. Belle's have a footprint of 18" x 30", which is what I built, but K-500's are rare as hens teeth.

The problem is that HD 350/K-400 horn is so deep and won't fit into Cornwalls or Belles. You have to get a more shallow horn which changes the crossover points.

You can always build a pair of Type AA's from scratch (what I did) or buy some from Crites or find some used on e b a y and swap the caps out. Keep it simple and try not to reinvent the wheel..

Proper Klipschorn and the Speakerlab Khorns use a woofer designed for that folded horn design. In the older woofers made by EV and Stephens Trusonic, there was a K in the model number. This told us what type of system that driver was made for. It wasn't a generic driver.

Biggles

I did not think about the Woofer Driver being Speaker specific, so thanks for that. So it looks like I will need to find a pair of appropriate woofers to handle the bottom end. Something made for a front driving Cabinet with similar specs to the K 33. I spoke with ALK Engineering today and he thought the ALK Universal Crossover would work nicely for this project as it will dial back the squawker to a more appropriate level. I think the main issue then will be the Woofer.

I thought about the HD 350 being so long but I thought the hat or horn enclosure could have a partial back to support the tail end and also allow for some sort of wire cage to protect it. It would still only be about 25 inches front to back.

I say good effort. Who knew about this Hoffman guy anyway? (Har).
And there's this other guy Eddie that I keep hearing about. Eddie here, Eddie there.

625756.jpg Beta Sound of Dallas made a version of the Klipschorn using the same drivers but in much smaller box, in the middle to late 70's. The mid horn was almost identical , but a tad shorter. The woofer was loaded into a short rapid flair front horn with tuned ports down the side that could be opened or plugged to match the room speaker location. It used the same tweeter, too. The crossover was different for sure. The speakers looked similar to a Tannoy Westminster but scaled down to about half the size. The speakers efficiency was similar to the current Cornwall or about 3 db less than a Klipschorn. I'll try to find a photo. It was about 30" wide and 48 tall as a best guess and made 24 inches deep. I don't have any product sheets anymore. They built three different versions. The smallest out performed a Hersey and the middle one was about the same as a Cornwall. The big one was good and I preferred the balance to A Corner Horn, but didn't work in a Corners as well as a Corner Horn. The company used a open cell foam to cover the drivers about 3/4 inch thick. It was a heavy bugger for sure.

I've done more or less the same project...EMINENCE K-33's,EV 800hz mid horns w/ATLAS 40watt drivers,and EV T-35s with X-overs that appear homebuilt.All this in
ported cabinets. My listening area wont support Kornerhorns.Done for less than $400.00.They sound pretty good too!

Looks like the Eminence Kappa-15C 15" Driver 4 Ohm is a likely candidate. Replacement for Cornwall
Use what you have to build Cornwalls. Its the easiest and best solution.
The Cornwall or similar style is what I had in mind. However It appears I will need to replace the Woofers for a front driving style but other than that the Crossovers mentioned should pick up the slack as they are designed for Cornwall, La Scala and the Belle Klipsch. Thanks for your input

Thanks I think I'm getting close However the Cross overs are going to set me back 349 I think and the Woofers are 119 ea. so not quite that cheap a project but much better than shelling out for finished product. Should be around 6 or 650 all in.

The corner of the room is part of the speaker as designed. You can use them elsewhere, but they won't sound the same because the bass won't be propagated as efficiently.
