KLH-1 Score

Here you go…the 100uf (bypassed with a 0.01uf CD 940c, based on humblehomemadehifi recommendation) is the big black one on the left. No room on the board for it. The big red one in the middle is the 10uf Jantzen supreme. The bottom left is the 4.7uf Jantzen and the 0.33uf Miflex. I also upgraded the inductors (Erse air core) and resistors (Kiwame).

I used 16g to rewire with some wire I found at my parents. My dad used to be a Western Electric installer. The wire isn’t labeled but it was with all his WE gear, so who knows…definitely better than what was in there!

Yes and no! Everything is the same except my midrange speaker has 100uf rather than 50uf!!! That's a big difference. I am not sure what the exact impacts would be other than raising(?) the crossover frequency between the mid and woofers?

I assume nothing sounds "wrong" with your speakers, right?

Nope - they literally came in the factory boxes that way. I wonder why the change? What are the serial numbers on yours? Mine are 006976 (can't get to the other at the moment, blocked in by wood for a construction project) Curious to see whether they are older or newer.

Interesting...my serial numbers are 68913 and 68779, so...'much' newer. I have seen crossovers that have 2-50ufs and like mine with 1-100uf.

Maybe I can find a 50uf cap somewhere in my enormous stash of parts to substitute and hear the difference. Everything else in yours appears to be exactly the same.

I wish I knew more about crossover designs and how to determine what type of crossover this is. Best I can calculate using some on line tools is that using 50uf moves the frequencies that go through the mid driver higher. This calculation is based on using the 0.4mH inductor, series cap (50uf/100uf) and 24 ohm resistor. In my limited understanding, I'm not sure what the 10uf and 4R components do.

In my experience, a smaller cap will likely move the frequency higher. But that also depends on the impedance of the drivers and the other components.
 
I have KLH-1's and 2's. Only have the computer for the Klh-2 though.
I've been using the KLH-1's a lot lately and am super impressed with these speakers. No one I know has even heard of them.1000009890.jpg1000009945.jpg
 
I just got these wonderful speakers. Someone had messed around with replacing the foam before. Please send me a link to buy the right foam so I can replace it. The only question is what kind of foam it is. I'll cut the shape myself. Thanks in advance.

I just sold a pair of KLH 1 speakers and the bass module to AKer @juanann , The foam surrounding the mid and tweeter had some damage on mine but I never bothered replacing it as it was largely intact. Replacing with most any dense rubberized foam should do the trick. Just remove the old foam intact, lay it on a new piece of foam and trace the pattern. Then cut new foam as required to fit.

After a few days I can confirm that these are great speakers. If it helps anyone, I used a 14V AC transformer with a 3.5 mono Jack plug to power the ABC. It works perfectly.I know that the links provided refer to stores in Poland, but you can also get them in other countries.


I ordered the foam from a company that laser cuts shapes to size. I gave them a drawing and I should receive it next week. We'll see if it's any good.

The foams for the KLH-1 have arrived.
They look very good.

But before they are glued in, the speakers will undergo a thorough service.

Work is slowly moving forward. There is already new veneer, painted front and glued foam.
What remains to be done is damping, mounting terminals, crossovers and wiring.
