KLH 6 With Weird Grills

Picked up a pair of KLH Model 6s today, what can I say, I'm a sucker for anything Henry Kloss designed. All drivers work but caps are original, so they'll have to go, and the surrounds need to be redoped. I Listened to them for about 10 minutes and was really impressed especially with old caps and leaky surrounds. The one thing that's got me baffled is the grills on this pair. I've never seen a pair with grill like these before on a pair of KLH speakers. If they came off some other speaker they sure do fit well. Anyone seen this type of grill on a pair of 6s before?

Those are KLH grills and fairly rare! They look great!
Totally agree with cap replacement and surround reseal..
What are the serial numbers and can you post a pic of the backs?

Those are neat, esp from a historical perspective. Looks like KLH may have been concerned about the wood strips blocking the high frequencies. Good call on their part. The gap in serial numbers must mean they made more than a thousand of them?
 
You guys are no fun. I was hoping to hear that these weren't the right grills so I could just put some new cloth on them and be done. I guess I'll have to figure out how to restore them.
 
Yea, the grills come off fine. The fabric on one is badly faded, the other is not bad, but it is missing one of the short wood pieces that go across the top. Making a new wood piece won't be hard, but getting the wood pieces off the fabric might be a pain. I was thinking about trying a heat gun or an iron. Then getting the spacing right when I glue them to new fabric will be a slow process.
 
Very Nice! I have seen those before, but not often. Most likely those were an optional grill that dealers must have ordered in along with the regular cloth. Based on the serials, those are fairly late in the KLH production run. Are the cabs the vinyl faux veneer? I'd love to find a pair of those. The WAF would go way up!
 
No they are a wood veneer. Gave them a critical listen this evening. I found that one tweeter was only playing at about half volume. Did a quick recap with a some mismatched film caps I had on hand, fixed the tweeter volume. I actually wound up listening to them for over an hour, damn these things sound nice, definite keepers.
 
I've heard that sometimes with the older oil caps, you don't necessarily have to replace them. Could be wrong on this. I don't know old these are, and if these would have oil caps or not. I have a pair of really old KLH 6's that have a different grill than these, and don't have the classic cloth grill that sound really great. The grills aren't removable, so I just play them as is. I don't know how they'd sound with a recap. But they sound really good, as is. I'll get a pic up of them later.
 
Nice find. I'm a big fan of the Model Six, they've been in regular use at my work. A recap helped ALOT to bring back the tonal balance.
